I actually ride for both reasons...but the primary one is because I want to.

Closest answer is because I have to. I am less pleasant to live with if I don't get in my bike time.. Since I like to put on a happy face, Guess that means I have t to.

I put "because I want to"; but I guess technically it's "because I have to" since I also get really cranky without physical exercise. Also I just spent all this money on bikes...
Since you're asking this in a forum, presumably full of enthusiasts who enjoy talking about cycling when they're not doing it, your results are going to be skewed. (Unless you're looking at how enthusiasts classify their behaviour.) The bikers who bike because they have to are not really represented here; for them it's just a way of getting to their job and they don't want to spend extra time or money talking about it. I don't join a motorists' forum in the winter when we drive to work.

I'm really new to bicycling. I've been riding a stationary bike at the gym, and thought a real bike might be more fun (it is).
Also wanted to try the bike as transition to a motorcycle, needing to regain strength in my wrist and hand.
The bike is fun in itself, though. I like the quietness of the ride, and the exercise.

I ride to get exercise and have fun doing it.
If I have to be somewhere, I take the Vespa.

I ride because:
1. I don't want to count on public transportation in my area - which sucks big time!!!
2. I don't want to burden my relatives for a ride - they do more than enough for me.
3. I don't own a car (nor plan to have a car (which goes back to reasons #1 & #2).
Now when someone asks me why I don't drive, I don't go into reasons 1, 2 & 3. I simply say "I'm going green." That shuts them up in a nano second it seems.

I agree I have to ride like I have to breathe. I am not a pleasant person to be around if I don't ride. Life is easier to take when I am riding.
