bicycle poetry
Here are two poems that I wrote as a result for my passion for cycling...
What am I on?
People want to know what I am on...
What am I on? I'm on my sixty seven centimeter custom steel Rock
Lobster bicycle. I named it my giant green
road racicing machine. It's painted metalic
british racing green with yellow labels.
It has Mavic open pro rims with Michelin Pro Race Performance tires.
The sprocket, front deralier and brakes are Ultegra,
evrething else is Dura Ace. Ritchey stem. Ego power handle bar.
Sella Italia yellow leather saddle with titanium rails,
Look 296 racing pedals. Schimano flight deck; cordless and intergrated
in the hoods for finger tip trip information and stats!
Thompson titanium mountain post. Chris King threadless head set,
two Elite bottle cages, and a thirty cubic inch Pearl Izumi tale gate for
the bare minumim tools that are required when riding, cruzing, rolling,
free wheeling,climbing,moving,spinning,sprinting, crashing, dancing on
my pedals, pulling away from the peloton,
trying desperatly to rejoin the back end of the peloton after the Postal
Boys started a very fast tempo that has stretched the peloton long and thin.
Their speed is unrelentless...
they want to launch their Captain Lance Armstrong into orbit at the base
of Mount Ventox long before any other rider in this powerfull peloton does!!!!
about this poem
This poem was inspired a Lance Armstrong commercial...
BIKE THE DRIVE
Bike the drive.
It is fun.
Bike the drive
Like when you were a little kid
and you stuck your hand out
and said to your friend
give me five!
Bike the drive.
It is fun like running around in a playground,
swinging from swings,
flying a kite,
like when you were young
it helped make the whole world go round
bike the drive!
Bike the drive.
Just for the simple fact that you can.
Bike the drive.
Match or surpass the feeling you had when your parents took away the
training wheels from your first bike when you were five!
Bike the drive.
Rejoice you are alive!
About this poem:
June 15, 2003 the city of Chicago closes down Lake Shore Drive from 5:00 a.m to 10:00 a.m. to allow passage to over 12,000 cyclist of all types of shapes and sizes (that's people and bicycles!) I wrote this poem the night before while driving home thinking in my mind how much FUN I will have when I bike the drive with two freinds from work and 12,000 other people who are passionate about bicycles and cycling like myself.

Back atcha!...
"Arms, hands, bars, knees
Spinning blur, fast trees
Heart bangs, tires sing
Wind roars, gears ching
Climbing grade, sweat drips
Heavy legs, a couple sips
Breathing deeper, suck the air
Crest a hill, pedals tear
Feel no pain, feel no burn
Still time to go another turn
Mind is clear, thighs are tight
Rolling speed, wheeled flight
Cycling!"

Club Ride
Two Wheels apart perfectly round
Sitting upright upon the ground
Connected together by a frame
Their is distance to be gained
Rider legs start to spin
Effort results and motion begins
We are a serial dance of Wheels
Now speed is what I feel
Inches apart to each we trust
The effort is to keep it in sync
Always alert we have to think
I leave my direction to those ahead
My focus must be
The rider's wheel in front of me
I push to be my best
My Energy out is less
Pulled along the course
A gift from those in the lead
This help, most days I need
Every rider with there own cadence of spin
Yet our speed is all as one
This is called a paceline, its fun
Two Wheels apart perfectly round
Sitting upright upon the ground
Connected together by a frame
Their is distance to be gained
Rider legs start to spin
Effort results and motion begins

Saturday A. M I wait . The train arrives ,I board with my folded bike. The train travels next stop, next stop, next stop etc. How many stops? This is my stop! I grab my bike and debark. On the platform I unfold it and ride away . Far from home.

I once met a man in DC,
Who rode to work on his fixie,
As he sped past jammed traffic
You could hear him just laughing,
"Those cagers will never catch me."

Moments in Motion
Circles in motion, Triangles away!
In desert ocean, on backroads astray!
Quick feet going round, arms pushing ahead,
Rubber falling down, and rising instead.
Muscles churn in time, quick thoughts moving on,
Synchronized in rhyme, Wheels and road sing on.

The Road, Sky, and Mountain
The Road, Sky and Mountain
You watch as the pedals move
in a never ending circle,
twin wheels beat the pavement
smoothly silent.
The red bags hanging on the front
flap slowly in the pine scented breeze.
The sky is perfect
few puffy bright clouds
against the morning sun.
A hawk catches the first thermal,
spinning in the sky.
The whistle of a car's wheels behind
is followed by a quick rush of wind,
and the glint of the sun off the window.
The road is straight and narrow
unbending for miles.
Trees, needle thin, point to heaven,
yet the road points to the snow capped peak
miles away,
never growing or shrinking as you pedal to it.

a little poem i wrote and posted in the winter cycling forums
im no poet
"i yearn for the summer time"
i want to feel the coolness of a breeze on my sweat drenched clothes,
every short-cut is unobstructed by the banks when it snows,
the delicious air that's so refreshing and mild,
i can hit the trails in the woods and feel a little wild,
the precision of warm rubber on dry pavement,
i can move about town with out looks of amazement,
i do not have to worry about staying warm,
my shoes have clips and i worry about my form,
my water bottles don't freeze by them selves,
the road bike waits patiently in the garage by the shelves,
a ride in the summer is freedom, don't take it for granted
six months of the year i trudge through snow muttering god damn it!
i do not need to de-ice the tumblers in my lock when it storms,
i dislike society but in summer its easier to follow the norms
just being that guy who rides a bike and not one who is crazy,
surrounded by those who are too f**kin lazy,
despite all the odds i am not snowbound ,
i pedal my happy ass all around,
watch my coworkers scurry to their cars,
with out a gas pedal they wont go far,
perhaps man is to domesticated,
im not just an a**hole its a little more complicated
don't forget that you are still a primate,
what good are you if you cant survive in your natural climate?
hold on to that little bit of natural instinct,
who am i kidding lets just hope some people still think.
