Trying to Choose a Bike is Making My Head Dizzy!

Hello all!

I'm an absolute newb when it come to biking, so much so that I don't even own a bike yet! You can read my introduction post here: https://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...gs-from-So-Cal!

So I registered for these forums because when I made the decision to buy a bike and went shopping online, I realized that I had no clue about bikes whatsoever. I noticed bikes as cheap as $99 and as expensive as $6000! Why they were priced in that range I had no clue. So I thought some of you here could help me out and teach me a bit on what I should be looking out for in a bike.

I am only 5'8", but unfortunately weigh 225lbs (which is why I want to buy a bike!). I live in an area in San Diego county that has a fair amount of inclined slopes, so a bike that gives me an advantage during uphill climbs is what I desire. I also will be biking mostly on paved streets, but I might take it out on unpaved areas. I really don't care much about speed. I would like a bike that is as lightweight as possible, but I understand that going after the more lightweight parts will end up emptying your bank account quicker, so maybe something that's not too heavy? I'm willing to spend between $800-$1000 on a bike (maybe more if there is a great advantage).

If I need to spell out more information, I will gladly answer questions. But anyone who can help out in any sort of way, I would definitely appreciate it! Thanks!

Here, I'll put an example of what I'm looking at.

https://fisherbikes.com/bike/model/cobia

It's a 29" hardtail bike. I'm guessing the 29" refers to the size of the tires (thought I'm not sure). In my modest search of bikes, it seems to me that if that indeed was a 29" wheel, then it's larger than most bike tires. So, like what benefits do I get with a 29" wheel? What on earth does hardtail mean? Is this a good bike for going uphill? Does it come with good parts? LOL, I'm sorry, I'm just reading the specs of this bike and it feels like I'm reading gibberish.

If you plan on riding paved roads, I think you would be better off with a hybrid rather than a mountain bike. Trek makes a nice line of them and being you are in San Diego you should have no problem finding a decent one at the Trek store.
