Why do some dislike Trek bicycles / corporation?

Nothing against them, they just don't do it for me.
Presently ride a Jamis, and plan to replace it upon its demise with a Santa Cruz.
I don't hate -- couldn't care less about Lance -- but I ride what I like.

Trek makes good bikes and I like Lance but I don't roll on Trek because they are just boring and plain and generic with some exceptions. What is a Bontrager?

There are many other brands that offer better value. For example, Costco had the Diamondback Podium 2 last month for $500.

I like Trek but they are getting expensive. Was I just imagining or is Trek selling two thousand dollar hybrids??? Incredible
I think people see the Trek brand and just buy right away never giving others a try. I've learned long ago that a bike's fit is more important than the brand. The lower priced Trek Hybrids felt almost exactly as the Giant hybrids at the same price level with all things being equal.

I've bought Trek hybrids for myself and Mrs specialfx primarily because of what I read here, in these forums. A friend also bought a Trek MTB and only had good things to say.
We used to ride Cannondales 7 years ago and gave up cycling because of a new life that involved constant traveling. Before making a decision, I looked at Specialized, Giant, Jamis but the service at the Trek LBS and the positive feedback here made the decision for me.
So far, the experience with the bikes makes us want to get out there and ride more. More positive reviews than naysayers in the Hybrid forum, although I've notice the same one or two posters who knock Trek every chance they get (gets too be a bit tired, after a while because you know what that poster will have an "insightful' comment to add).
Are they the best value out there? No, but for all intents and purposes, they meet the needs of a lot of riders in different segments- competitive (with the other big brands) pricing with strong after sales support. The amount of marketing money helps too.

Trek reminds me of Giant. They don't appeal to me. I am sure they are good bikes at certain price levels. But too many around. Too blah.

I've been biking almost 30 years. Lots of manufacturers have come and gone in that time period, but Trek made good bikes back then and still makes good bikes now.

Those who offer the best value for the $ rarely go the long distance. It's all about marketing and targeted pricing to take out the competitors.

Chevrolet isnt well liked in the car world. They like to cut corners to save money. The average person can't tell but when you have to fix it, you really start to notice. Ive heard trek likes to cut corners with its bontrager parts. You kind of supported my argument

Most bikes now come out a few factories in China and Taiwan, whatever the name on the bike is. Trek or Specialized (or whoever) will spec the components, and some details of the frame build, and perhaps the QC level, but to say "Treks are better than Specialized" (or whatever) has mostly become meaningless in the context of how bikes are actually built now. It comes down to the individual model itself, and whether you like it and it works for you. But don't be surprised if a couple months after you buy (say) a Giant, you come across (say, maybe) a Fuji or a Bikesdirect bike that's 95% the same, including tell-tale frame details. That's not necessarily a bad thing, if the bike you bought is a good bike.
The comparison to the auto industry isn't totally right on. Car makers tend to have their own factories still --though some models are indeed made in joint venture plants with other companies, and some companies do sell rebranded versions others' cars, and a more and more cars are built from off-the-shelf components used by various companies.
Anyway, there's no reason to dislike Treks more than any other "branding" companies that have things made for them in the Far East (which, these days, means most American "manufacturers", from clothing to bikes to appliances to whatever). In reality the name means nothing. The reality is what actually physically exists. That which has inherent value. The quality of the parts -- the finish of the materials, the metal used, etc have inherent value.
Seek that quality, not the name. Don't be fooled by "branding," seek quality in spite of "branding," and you will have satisfaction.

My wife and I have Trek Madones, Ultegra, Race Lite wheels, full carbon. We really like the bikes. Not cheap though (mid-3Ks). And we had problems with one Bontrager rear hub/free wheel. And we had trouble with 2 6700 shifters. Finally got those issues resolved. We don't especially like or dislike Trek Co.

For the most part I find Trek-hate to be completely subjective, just someone automatically hating the big guy. I've liked all the Treks I've owned and I think they do a pretty good job of following the wants of the cycling market, and the stuff they miss virtually creates niche markets that folks like Rivendell can cater to. The criticism I have heard that I do take seriously is one I've heard from various friends in the LBS business, they've got some strong arm tactics in regards to exclusivity. They aren't the only company who's guilty of throwing their weight around, obviously, and for all I know that may have changed.

Like any manufacturer in some cases Trek will meet your needs and sometimes Giant, Jamis, Specialized or someone else will. But in the end it all comes down to components and wheels and service.
Still there is a reason so many suggest getting a bike from a LBS rather than a department or Big Box Store. But just looking at who and where your bike is made might let you know that the biggest difference between bikes in components.

Bontrager is either a Trek "private label" or simply a supplier that has a very close relationship with Trek.
