Was sold a 2009 version of a bike at 2010 version price

So I bought a pair of "2010" Kona Dew Drops for my girlfriend and I. I went to my LBS about 3 or so weeks ago and they said there were no 2009 clearance ones left at our sizes so I decided to order the 2010 version instead. There were none left in Canada so they had to make an order to get them from the states apparently. I pick them both up last Friday and have ridden them a couple times since.

I researched them before and remembered the 2009 version had a problem with getting rear racks attached that the 2010 version had fixed. Looking at my bike it seemed like putting a rear rack on would be really awkward so I looked into it and imagine my surprise when I seem to have gotten a 2009 version painted black to look like a 2010.

2009 Dew Drop (notice where the rear disc brakes are situated)

2010 Dew Drop (notice how the rear disc brakes are in a different spot)

now look at my "2010" Dew Drop and how the disc brakes are situated the same as 2009 version yet painted black to look like the 2010 version.

And it isn't just the frame that is 2009. There are a few other changes between the 2009 and 2010 version. My chainrings are 52/42/30 which is 2009 instead of 48/38/28. The crank arm is FSA Vero (2009) instead of FSA Alpha Drive. Disc brakes are Avid bb7 instead of Shimano R505 Disc.

you can see 2010 specs here http://www.konaworld.com/bike.cfm?content=dewdrop
    2009 specs here http://bikes.konaworld.com/09/09_dewdrop_uk.cfm

My front fork seems to be the 2010 version since it does not have braze ons (jeez the one thing I would want from the 2009 version!) and I think the freewheel is the 2010 version.

I really cannot believe that this has happened. I assume it is kona who shipped it like this without my LBS realizing it. Whoever it was this is completely unacceptable to me and I am quite peeved about it. Going in to the LBS tomorrow to see what the heck is up.

Also mine has the white lettering which is different then the 2010 version on the website, but one review has a 2010 version like that here. http://road.cc/content/review/17391-kona-dew-drop

edit. I was also charged PST on the bikes when I shouldn't have been since bikes under $1000 dollars are exempt until July 1st http://www.rev.gov.on.ca/en/notices/rst/61.html

edit2. I just realized something else. When I picked the bikes up my LBS was trying to sell me pedals since the bikes didn't come with any and I said the bike should come with it according to the website. He checked the catalog and realized the 2010 version was supposed to come with pedals but kona never shipped any with them. Looking at the 2009 specs, that bike doesn't come with pedals.

I have yet to see a manufacturer that didn't have a disclaimer that said "specifications are subject to change without notice". Sounds lik it wasn't bad faith on the LBS's fault. It also could be a difference in american market spec versus CA market spec.

You did get better brakes in the BB7s, the crank set you got is better suited for the road as the 2010 is about pure hybrid.

Sorry, but the brake mounting you should have noticed before leaving the LBS with it if it was that important, certainly no issue using a disc specific rack to get by that. I certainly don't think you got snookered on what you bought. Production changes happen all the time. My Fuji Cross was supposed to have Avid Shorty's on it and had Tektro 720's.

The PST thing I'd raise the issue, that is the only misunderstanding I see

I have no problem with the bike at all, i really enjoy riding it and the minor difference in specs is not a problem (I am sure I wouldn't notice the difference anyways). What I find disconcerting is that there are two versions. One being the 2009 model at clearance price and one being the regular priced 2010 model which I bought yet get the (what should be cheaper) 2009 model. It isn't a matter of the bike actually being bad, just to me poor business practice of selling what is a clearance bike as the newer non clearance version (not my LBS fault since I doubt they realized anything was off).

As far as the "specifications are subject to change without notice" I can see it if its a thing or two, but the whole bike back to a previous model thats on clearance? that seems wrong. Not to mention the fact they didn't send any pedals (2009 version doesn't come with pedals while 2010 version does) which makes me think it really is just a 2009 model pretending to be a 2010.

I am certainly not fuming mad but definitely peeved, and perhaps wrongfully so, but I do feel that there is something wrong in this situation.

edit. As far as noticing the brake mounting problem I have never bought a nice bike and have only had cheap department store bikes until now. The slight difference in the disc brake placement is not something I would easily recognize as its the first bike I have ever seen with disc brakes. When I read they fixed some problem with the disc brake placement I had no idea what that entailed.

edit2. Looking a little into the whole US potentially has different specs ran across this http://sellwoodcycle.com/consignment.htm which is selling a 2009 dew drop (about 8 bikes down) that is black which explains the black paint. But its still a 2009!

Hummn! Could be a '09 that was welded up and on it's way to paint when they switched the line for '10.

Have you thought about calling the manufacturer up and giving them the serial number? They should be able to tell you what it is listed as.

I will add the 2009/2010 isn't like it's a titled vehicle that the documentation is screwed up on. I'd certainly pose the question to the LBS in a non-confrontational way, but you actually did get some better components than you would have had the bike been 2010 spec. It's not uncommon, and it's obvious that it occurred here in that manufacturers downspec a model to hold pricing. That's what looked like happened here.

I'll second Sirrus Rider's thought too, in that it may well have been a 2009 frame that was caught in the changeover to the next years model.

See what the LBS says, but approach it civilly of course. My brakes on my Fuji didn't bother me since they were upspec. I do have a 2010 Trek that they shipped with different wheels than spec, but they made that switch with no questions.

Thanks for the idea. I can't seem to find a phone number to call though! I was going to register them online and see if that said anything but it needs a warranty registration code that comes with the owner manual warranty card and I didnt receive one (another thing to look into). Looks like I will just be talking with the shop to find out.

I definitely will not be raging at the LBS. Even if I was extremely mad I find yelling and acting like an ass usually doesn't help! I just want to figure out whats going on and get to the bottom of it.

Thanks again for the responses. Helps me get a better perspective of what likely happened before heading in to talk about it.

Same thing happened to my friend, but it was a 2007 model being sold as a 2009. He went back the next day and "discussed" it with them. They feigned ignorance and gave him store credit since he actually liked and wanted to keep the bike, (but offered the choice of returning it)

He looked at the paperwork that came with the bike. The manual had a copyright date of 2007 on it.

I got the same Kona Dew Drop that you got. The store called mine a 2009 1/2. They said Kona puts their bikes out at strange times or intervals. Anyway I think you got a good deal/nothing funny going on..............well at least with the parts..........maybe you should've gotten the clearance price though. Mine was on clearance for $559, but it was bought later in the year August 6th.

If you look at the space on the frame where the 2 long tubes come together underneath the handlebars you'll see you got the 2010 frame with 2009 specs. Someone else mentioned that the specs on the Kona website for the 2010 model are incorrect; the specs for 2009 & 2010 are the same. Who knows?

Even if they were correct the 2009 specs were better from what I've been told. My bike is exactly the same as your's except mine doesn't have white lettering and I got some pedals (which are the only thing I dislike as they only have 1 useable side to them).

I have a 2010 Dew Drop (with the rear brake caliper between the stays). That is the only difference between mine and yours. I also have the 52/42/30 Vero crankset and BB7's.
That was the main reason I got one... I think the 2010 specs were listed wrong on the site.

Interesting how the 2010 specs seem to be wrong on the site.

As an update my LBS did give me a bit of money off, not the 2009 clearance price but some back which was what I was hoping for (along with my PST back which they had to).

The bike has been great and since I did get some money back to appease me I am very happy with the bike.
