I don't own a car, so yes, it's worth more than the car. Collectively, our bikes are worth more than the car my fiancé owns.

    Answering only for myself...

    worth more then your car??
Each of my four bikes is worth more than the last car I owned, and I got rid of it in 1999. Haven't owned one since.

and what happened to "slow biking"??
I ride for transportation. Like many people, I want to get from point A to point B in a reasonable amount of time, and my employer frowns on being late for work.

does it always have 2b about miles?
See point A to point B above. If it's X miles between them, then that's what I have to ride--twice.

and why all the gizmos and gadgets on a bike??
    • Racks to carry stuff.
    • Fenders keep me and the bike clean in the rain and snow.
    • Frame pump so I don't have to walk after having a flat.
    • Mirror makes seeing behind me easier in traffic.
    • Lights are for seeing after dark and being seen both before and after dark.
    • Dynamo hub so I'm not filling the landfill with used batteries for the lights.
    • Cyclometer because it's fun to make drivers gasp in awe of my riding a paltry 5 miles to work, then following up with, "Yeah, I know, lame. But I rode 70 on Sunday."

And why so critical of others? If you want to ride stripped-down Walbike at 5MPH for a half-mile once a month, that's just fine with me. I'm glad to see you on two wheels.

Yes the collection is worth more than my car, individually not so.
I still bike slow...15mph is a fast day for me.
Who counts miles? None of my bikes have odometers, speedometers or computers on them, unless you count the Blackberry in my pocket or the net book in the seat bag.
What gizmos and gadgets? Fenders keep me clean, ditto the chain guard/cases, lights are for riding at night LEGALLY!, racks and baskets are for carrying stuff, the bell is for my entertainment because ipod wearing wandering walkers cannot hear it anyway.

Some of them are, others aren't. So what?

and what happened to "slow bikeing"??
What's "slow biking?" I enjoy riding, some days I enjoy riding fast. Again, so what?

does it always have 2b about miles?
It isn't. It's about being outside, getting some exercise, having some fun, being with friends. Miles just happens to be a convenient way to compare with others, and to talk about it. And to decide if a proposed ride is something I want to do or not. And to let folks know what to expect if they're coming along with me. Miles, in and of themselves, aren't important unless training for something.

and why all the gizmos and gadgets on a bike??
Cause they're fun, and/or add a margin of safety.
    -------

Some sort of pithy irrelevant one-liner should go here.

Are my two bikes worth more than my car. I don't have a car so this question doesn't apply to me. Nevertheless, if I had a car, the car would still cost more presently.

My two bikes are my main source of transportation so it is all about the miles and the weather.

It's freakin hot in Florida, not just for a few weeks but months on end. Therefore, I try to get to my destination as quickly as I can before I get sunstroke or sunburn. Mind you, I wear a straw hat and put sunblock on but I still have to worry about the sun.

That said, I'm not exactly speed racer on the bike. Compared to others I'm practically standing still but I'm not going slow to enjoy the scenery. I'm watching out for turning cars, pot holes on the road that could send me crashing.

    worth more then youir car??

My car (according to Edmunds.com) is worth a bit over $6000. I have six bikes that I ride that I paid $0, $0, $30, $50, $100 for, and the sixth my wife got me for Christmas and I think she paid about $300. So the total of the bikes is less than $500.

and what happened to "slow bikeing"??

Not sure what you are referring to...

does it always have 2b about miles?

    No.

and why all the gizmos and gadgets on a bike??

    I don't know. I have none.

My bikes don't have speedometers, odometers, GPS's, or any other sort of electronic paraphernalia. It just doesn't matter anymore- I'll get where I'm going when I get there. I've got a cell phone in my bag- I might actually get around to using it for something someday.

    1. Not at the moment. At the moment our vehicle is worth more than our collection of bicycles ... but it's close. A little over a year ago, our collection of bicycles would have been worth more than the vehicle we had at the time.

    2. Slow biking is taking place over here in Australia every time I get on a bicycle.

    3. I'm a long distance cyclist, so covering long distances is a key part of that.

    4. Because I like them.

Yeah, no electronic stuff on my bike other than battery-powered lights. I use fenders and racks to carry crap.

Wife and I have one small car -- our 2 bikes together probably cost the same as what I could sell the car for.

I use thumb shifters from the 1980's, so nothing advanced there either.

No car, so yes. About the same at the time the car took a 'dump'....

Slow biking is what I do: a.) with my 7-y-o nephew; b.) in the winter when it's nasty; c.) on a really HOT summer day after work.

Miles are just a reference point, like stepping on the scale every week or so (something I haven't done since the army).

?? I have gears, so I have shifters, and I have brakes. I have suspension for my bad lower back. Are these the gizmos to which thou dost refer?

worth more then youir car??--- No, the car-centric society we live in has driven (no pun intended) the price of the average new, or used auto far above and beyond what I would be able to pay for a bicycle.

and what happened to "slow bikeing"?? --- It's alive and well, and growing daily; just look around you when you ride.

does it always have 2b about miles?--- Miles or Km, have always been a way to measure were you have been, how far you have yet to go, and your progress between the two. It's only natural to wish to know how far you have traveled, but for some it is a way of measuring their overall capabilities and some bragging rights can become involved.

and why all the gizmos and gadgets on a bike??--- Some are for safety, some are for utility, and some are just plain fun. Even as a kid I had a (cable operated) speedometer, and battery operated lights, and playing cards in the spokes, and any other stuff that seemed fun at the time on my 70's Hufffy. I've grown older, but not necessarily boring... Do I need all that stuff? Not always, but sometimes it's good to have when you need it.

    1. My cars are worth more than the bikes
    2. I only do slow biking (fast biking happened years ago when I was 22)
    3. What other measurement do you want to use? Miles, MPH, Watts? Miles is the easiest to measure or in my case I go to double electric pole after the lift station then turnaround and go home.
    4. because I have a flashlight fetish, and am an information junkie. I do find that I am using less gadgets, having many bikes I just have a Suunto watch and a gps pod. I really don't have a need for most of the other information. and my touring has a bare bones computer (mph, odometer, trip distance, time).
I don't do vintage, I bought them new, rode them, kept them. Now they are just old bikes

There is a lot of middle ground. I commute, so good bikes pay for themselves. I go 'pretty fast', and 'pretty far' (well sometimes all day) without trying to race; speed and miles help me reach my goals. Like Machka, I'm into long distance cycling. A simple computer and good lights are hardly excessive, and definitely useful.

Some of the carbon fiber people have no business being on the bikes they ride, but I won't judge them. If they drop 10 grand to train for and ride a few club rides, centuries or tri's, so what? There are a lot of activities where people spend more and accomplish less. If cycling gets them excited instead of sailing or golfing or building a hot rod, I can't see the harm.

    1. No. That's why riding makes more financial sense than driving.
    2. Nothing happened to it.

When I bought the bike in 2001 it was worth about 2X what the car was worth. But now its 9 years old and I bought a new car in 2008 that cost a great deal more than what I paid for the bike.
