It WILL fall off, and possibly into something that's spinning.

I do this all the time:

Get a medium-sized couple of hose clamps and cut 2 pieces of old tube to protect the paint, viola!

Works like a charm.

I did that on an old Continental. It worked for seven years.

Seven? Damn, I've only had mine running for .....well, 1.5 years now I think.

If I got seven I'd be pretty content and probably would just replace the clamps after that .

The fork fatigued and broke first. I parted the bike out. Paid $20 for it. It was a mid or early '70's model Continental, yellow. Put a sliced off piece of inner tube between the cage and the seat tube. Never thought twice about it. Seven years, true story. The frame had no mounting holes for cage screws.

So silicone caulk + hose clamps on an appropriately shaped bottle cage.. [gotta have tabs sticking out ,
to go under them hose clamps,
or you add a step. making what you have into something you need.
screwing thru another piece of aluminum, say with some flat head screws,
to attach to the cage..
then the extra bit, sticking out... will have a hose clamp worthy anchor point.

a bodge worthy of the name.

Oh and look at 'two fish 'company's rubber and velcro attached water bottle cages
they work, and are a quick install..

I wouldn't use silicone. A piece of inner tube will give you the buffering. Silicone will just be a mess before and after it cures. Not worth it.

I am a musician, so I do know what a viola is, but am curious as to how it applies to a bike. Does someone play it in the room as you repair the bike? I'm so totally out of contact.

Yes. I'm surprised that you haven't encountered that before. Here in Missouri all of the classier bike shops - each and every one - have a string quartet playing in the shop to soothe and entertain the mechanics. Why do you suppose that bike shop tune ups cost as much as they do?

Same topic, but a dumb question.. here goes..

Are the screw holes on the frames/downtube for the water cages on all bikes standard? If so, what size screws?

You carry the viola so you can have music on the longer rides.

I'm calling BS! I lived for 8 years in the Camdenton area and went to school in Springfield, and even worked in a shop there. We mostly listened to the Mars Volta and Radiohead.

The twofish cages move around. They move even worse if they get wet.
