Looking for some help in PDX

I recently purchased a headset and bottom bracket and would love to take the time to install them myself, however I have no interest in purchasing a specific tool for a one time job.

Is there anybody located in Portland OR, with the tools that might be willing to teach me and help me out?

Your LBS might let you watch and ask questions while they install them.

I've noticed that a lot of people on BF live at the Portland airport. What's up with that? Been through there many times, and it's nice enough, but geez...

I guess it just frustrates me that I was on the lookout for a specific chris king color, and they would not order it for me (even though they state they can get anything chris king makes), and now that I have purchased it from another vendor they want to charge double to install it. $40 for a headset, $30 for a bottom bracket...

take it to the vendor that you bought it from. maybe a bike co-op? the link that Fietsbob listed appears to be a co-op

The community Cycling Center is definitely my next go-to, I just figured I would ask my local online community if there is someone that would like to help out, make it a little more personal, and perhaps gain a bike friend as well.

No can do on the vendor, I had to purchase it from an online shop up near Seattle.

Yikes! Is this on a bike that already has a headset/stem/bars and BB/crank on it? If so, I retract my yikes and replace it with a "that sounds about right".

I'd offer to help, but I always use the wrong tools for popping headsets in, so I'd be scared to screw up a King.

Besides, I'm in Vancouver and most folks in Portland can't bear to come up here

Kilo TT Stripper headset and bottom bracket not the best...especially in Oregon. I love the idea of supporting local businesses, and I just so happen to live less than a mile from Chris King.

@LesterOfPuppets, I thought about trying to put it in myself as Chris King's website states it can be done with caution, but like you said, I would hate to screw up a brand new headset (especially since its gold)

Oh, so it is on a bike that's already built. Service rates are reasonable, then. Removing old HS can be a bit of a pain. If it was a bare frame which required no facing, then those prices would be kinda high.

Again, it's not that I have an issue paying to get it done. I was just hoping to be able to do it myself, without purchasing the special tools for a one time job... and to make a friend in the process. Aside from the Community Cycling Center (which hasn't gotten back to me yet), 21st Avenue Bikes can do it for $65.

That place out on Belmont has workstand/tool rental, just bring your bike in and wrench away (oops, you gotta reserve a time, I reckon). Check it out:
