i let my sister borrow my winter bike to get around town and it was stolen from behind her boyfriends apartment. after my sister told me i called the police and they told me they would send over an officer to take a description. 2hours later i get a phone call from the officer and he take a description over the phone. i was hoping they would have wanted a picture but they didn't. there was one question the officer asked me that made no sense, how much is it worth?. i wasn't quite sure what to say so i told him $150 even though it cost me nothing for it and all the new part i installed on it. i hope i get it back because i am pretty picky when it come to bikes and it is hard to find bikes for free that can put up with what i can put out.

Today, I found a nice, new Schwinn roadster (about 900 bucks worth) leaning against a bike rack here on campus with no lock at all. Normally, we just grab these and take them to the station....
I was just about to when junior came running out of the building. "I was just going to lock it up!" he says, holding out a cable lock that likely cost 3 or 4 bucks.
I said, "You're going to trust that thing?"
"Uh, what's wrong with it?"
"The theif can snip that quicker than you can fiddle the combination. Go over to the police station and get a Kryptonite." (We sell them to the kids for 20 bucks....Such a deal.)

spending 20 bucks on a lock for my sister to use would be a waste of money. this is not the first bike that she has used that has been stolen and i have bought locks for her in the past and they never get used. just because a bike is not locked up at a bike rack does not mean it is stolen. i don't think taking bike that have no locks on them to the station is a good thing unless they are stolen. taking the bike to the station just because it has no lock is just as bad as stealing it in my opinion.

Had a fellow bikie tell me he could steal our tandem in less than 1 minute . . .
We used a thin steel woven cable with a mini combo lock locked to a tall steel signpost..
While looking at my watch I told him: GO!
" . . . but I need a set of cable cutters . . . " he blurted.
Told him, "Your minute is up!"
Yes, a prepared bike thief can steal almost any bike that is locked up.
Our lock will deter a joy rider but not a pro.
Advice: Do not loan your bike out to irresponsible party . . .

I assume they asked this because there are different levels of theft depending on the value of the item stolen.

You really need to let the Rear wheel get stolen and get a new one of the proper size ...

no. like i said it is my winter bike. having a smaller back tire makes it run better through the snow.

She did you a favor by getting that one stolen. But I wouldn't loan her another one, take her to Wally World and let her buy a Roadmaster. Nobody will steal that POS.

she did not sell it because she hates walking and hates driving her friends piece of crap stunt bike with bent rims even worse. i didn't think anyone would steal my piece of crap winter bike. the thing is one of a kind. it has a dented 26" aluminum front rim and a 24" rear rim with a 3 leading 3 trailing lacing pattern. it only had front brakes
she didn't do me a favor by getting it stolen. she did the opposite. now i have to built a new winter bike and i have no clue where all my new bike parts are at the moment because all the stuff from my basement is sitting in a pod that is sitting in my driveway. just because the bike is cheap does not mean it is a piece of crap. it rides smooth as it was and it did its job good.

i found my bike yesterday. it was at the bar a block and a half away from where it was stolen.

yes. the rear wheel was still with it. the bike was pretty much in the same shape it was before it was stolen.

Congrats! So, perhaps someone just used your bike to go somewhere, then left it when job done? Shouldn't they leave a personal check/money order with it and a thank you note?

Not really trying to argue, but after building 20,000 BBS bikes, repairing 1,000's more, and seeing what you CAN get for just a little more, I do think I was correct. Someone who claims to be 'picky' wouldn't ride something from that collection of boat anchors.

But.........................if that's what you like, ride it. I'll just be suspect of your 'picky' claim................
