    Strong Prescription Cycling Sunglasses

    Hi guys!

I'm looking to purchase some prescription sunglasses for biking, but I can't find places that can match my prescription.

I'm a -7, -7.5 (Yes, horrible), and really am looking for a style like the Oakley Radar Pitch.

Any help is greatly appreciated. =)

not quite as bad as you, but you may have to find glasses with inserts. I have Rudy Project RB3s and love them. Pretty lightweight even with the inserts and I still get the wrap of the lenses without the distortion that is inherent with making those in my scrip.

How noticeable are the inserts? I'm most likely going to wear these just around as well.

Did you find a solution? Any wisdom?

I'm in a similar situation, only worse -- -10.25 prescription.

And I too have my hopes on Oakleys....

Not to hijack thread--I think I need some prescription goggles. I had a pair of "old guy glasses" (as in the old Letterman bit "what's the deal with old guys and big glasses"? in which he displayed photos of Dave Garroway, Groucho, Milton Berle, Larry King all wearing monster-size specs). I wear them for eye protection--if I wear my regular glasses the air makes my eyes tear. I've worn bifocals for maybe 15 years. I assume if prescription goggles are made that they'll be monovision. I can't find any on Nashbar or Performance, and haven't checked my LBS as yet. Any styles/sources that you like, esp. if they don't cost an arm and a leg?
    TIA!

Check out Walmart, believe it or not. Their optometry dept has some excellent sports glasses. Oakley also has a set of sunglasses where you have a prescription insert that snaps in place.

Don't bother with prescription sunglasses. It's better to wear these to get UV, glare, impact and sun damping all in one.

If you have thick lenses, using a wraparound lens may not be possible. Wasn't for me.

I then tried an insert. They rested on my eyelashes.

I just wear my glasses now.

My prescription is 'only' about a -5. I have contacts, only used for bicycling. That way I can use any old wraparound sunglasses I want. Due to age, I do have to pack some reading glasses, though.

sportrx.com has a nice service where they'll find what frames can work with your prescription. At -10, though, I think you're down to just a couple of options. Most cycling glasses stop around -6, and then you'll get asked if you want to try contacts or LASEK. (No, thanks, not for touring with camping and not when my ophthamologist says I'll have cataract surgery in the next few years!)

I've had trifocals for quite a while, and my prescription is all screwed up from having had a detached retina, followed by cataract surgery on ONE eye. They don't want to touch the other one because of the previos retina problem. It was the retina repair that caused the cataract.

Anyway, I gave up looking for prescription sunglasses. Recently I found some very nice looking fit-overs here: http://www.liveeyewear.com/vistana/

Love 'em so far. Only had them for a week. Before that used the ones someone else gave you the website for.

    Godd luck, and happy riding.

    Thanks everyone for the responses.

Elsewhere on the forum I found this link:
    http://pezcyclingnews.com/?pg=fullst...me=Tech%20News

Check out the Rudy Projects with -11 RX lenses! hooohaw!

I've called Sports Optical (mentioned in the article), and they've given me a couple of options that I can work with.

I agree that contact lenses or LASIK would be ideal, but neither option will work for me (lymbal stem cell deficiency).

    Rubber side down.
