Ripped Off?

i went for a fork replacement and was quoted $65. i said ok and left the bike. later i spoke to the owner who said that the original repair was not going to work so it was gonna be $100 more. He did the work which seemed ok. i later took my bike to a better bike shop and they said the complete job should have not been over $100 and messed up on the brakes. Guy ripped me off plain and simple. any opinions?

a fork replacement or a repair? You've said both things in your post. How would a replacement "not work" and cost $100 more??

First post, and he's already complaining about something. That's often a sign of a troll.

OP, if you want to ask about a mechanical situation, you'd probably be better off asking in the Mechanics forum: http://www.bikeforums.net/forumdispl...ycle-Mechanics

I doubt you were ripped off. I do a lot of my own maintenance on cars, bikes, houses, etc and I know that it's impossible to know how it's going to work out before you get into it. Guys who quote $65 and stick to it could be lucky or they might have cut a few corners when it didn't work out like they expected. When I get something done by a shop, I always just ask for an estimate and tell them to make sure it's done properly. That way I know there's no temptation to cut corners. If I were you I'd use that shop again because they are being honest and doing the right thing.

How do you know that the second guy isn't the one BSing you to get your future business?

I need to see a picture, or pictures, before and after.

I would have bought the new fork, and installed it myself. It saves lots of money to do your own repairs.

Yikes! i didn't know i was gonna get ripped a new one with my first post. i don't mean to be a "troll", its just something i had on my mind for some time now and thought i would ask the biking community for their opinion on the situation.

We really don't have enough info to comment. It could be the two mechanics just charge differently.

For example, what, precisely, did the second guy mean when he said the brakes were "messed up"?

xtrajack 09-18-10 07:07 AM

I do my own repair/replacement work. I know my mechanic isn't ripping me off.

My mechanic has a drinking problem...he can't wrench bikes without beer...I would fire his sorry butt, but I can't afford to pay someone else to to my work:eek::D

$65 to repair a fork is reasonable. $165 to replace a fork is reasonable. You must understand the difference between a repair job and a replacement.

The real issue is that you're asking us to give an opinion after hearing only one side of the story.

difference between handing you the part and putting it in for you,
is cost of Labor and Shop Overhead.
