Transporting a whole mess of bikes
So, I got a phone call yesterday from somebody that I've been picking road bikes up from. She said that she had just picked up 20+ road bikes, and that I'm free to take them if I wish. So... the question is- how big a truck am I going to need to make this in one trip? Does anybody have experience with moving a whole shop around like this? Any tips and tricks?

I can't answer your question about the truck, but a community BS I used to volunteer at always turned the stems 90 degrees and removed the pedals to maximize storage and minimize tangling when stacking bikes side by side.

It depends on the distance between the pick up and the destination. If its short distance, then several trips with a van would be fine. Getting a truck (renting) is like what the Orange County Wheelmen do when they transport 900 bikes on their annual Amtrak Century.
If you go to their site, there's a contact list of people who know how to move bikes. https://www.ocw.org/Amtrak/default.aspx

How good are the bikes?
If I'm hauling 20 $5,000 bikes I'm going to need more loading time and a bigger truck than if I'm hauling 20 $50.00 bikes.

I could probably get all of them in a single trip with a full sized long bed pickup...

If it were me, and the distance was, say, 50 miles or less, I'd make two trips or enlist another pickup owner to help.

Thanks for all the suggestions. At the end of the day, I had a friend who was moving across town and rented a u-haul for the day anyway, so I grabbed that and made the run. In the future, I might just grab a pickup and trailer though.

If you have a long bed pick up that you don't love too much, you can hang them off the sides like we do for rental bikes down here. Check out the rates for a 16" rental box truck too. I've loaded 40-odd bikes in one of those easily. I'm assuming unboxed and assembled bikes too.
