painting advice?

hello,
i have recently picked up a haro X1 for free(awesome). it had a crappy paint job on the handlebars and forks, so i would like to repaint them. i also have a frame i would like to paint.
i have a couple of questions that i would like to ask:
-what is a quality paint/clear coat to use? (medium price)
-any tips, hints, methods(not looking for short cust)
-what are the different grades of sand paper?
-how do you get rid of rust an paint over it?
-if i am painting the frame should i hang it or place it in a special way

thats it for now. thank you in advance.
and also if there is any home paint jobs you would like to show off then feel free.
thanks

There's a "Search" box (top right corner) for a reason.

I'm not a painter, so I'm only repeating what I've been told and seen on teh interwebs.

Most framebuilders using traditional "wet" paint use automotive paints. PPG being the brand most often mentioned. Go wherever the collision shops in your area buy their paint.

You may want to avoid the temptation of having a collision shop do the painting for you. Automotive painters generally are used to painting big flat things instead of small round ones.

Or there's always Krylon...

You may want to research or ask your question up in the Framebuilders forum: https://www.bikeforums.net/forumdispl...-Framebuilders

The search function here often sucks, so just ignore some of the snide remarks.

Powdercoating is often cheaper-and enivironmentally more friendly than traditional wet painting.

OK, fine... I've seen crappy powdercoating, too. They really need to know small tubes, too, to avoid thick buildup. I recently had a frame and fork done by Brooker Enterprises in Portland, Oregon: https://brookerenterprises.com/ and it came out great. $125 for both ain't bad... and I paid extra for a "pearl" paint.

BF's search still sucks.

thank you. i am confused exactly what powder coating is. is it something that i can do myself? or does it have to be done by a company? but i think i may just want to do a home one in that case.

Powder coating is done by a shop that specializes in Powder Coating. It is best to use someone that specializes in bicycles. If you plan to do it yourself, it is not easy to do right. I'm repainting a steel frame now. If you hae no experience painting, it would be best to have someone do it for you.
