Another magpie rant!

WTF was up with that psychotic moron magpie just south of Uki on today's ride? I must have squirted this **** with half a bottle of water, and he still came back -- a kilometre later! The bastard didn't aim at my helmet, but my neck -- I've got a nice little cut to show for it. That's bad when you're trying to protect some road rash on your shoulder!

I've never said this about any animal before, but I hope this little tosspot has an unfortunate encounter with a cane toad in the very near future!

Nasty !!

blue_neon 10-11-04 12:10 AM

I know what you mean! They're pyscho, and wont go away. I yell and try to scare them but it only makes them more mad:mad:! I can't go for a decent off-road ride, or even a ride on a bike path without being targated. Apparently they're not supposed to touch you when they swoop and just scare you, we'll i've also been in incidents with amateur ones :(. Next ride I bring along a tennis raquet :D

A tennis racket works quite nicely.

Swooping magpies are one thing I definitely do NOT miss since leaving QLD! I remember as a kid having a constant battle with a local magpie every day walking to and from the bus to school...

You can come and take all the magpies that were released into NZ back to Oz, the mad b*stards attack everything. I even saw a pair hustle a hawk out of their territory recently.

At least NZ's nuttiest native bird the Kea (http://www.doc.govt.nz/Conservation/...nimals/Kea.asp) only attacks property. They seem to have a penchant for rubber, so an unattended bike would be like a light snack. Their favourite though is wiper blades on cars in ski field carparks.

I shot a couple magpies yesterday. They're not as bold when they're looking at the business end of a 12 gauge.

Chicken?

hooligan 10-11-04 06:15 PM

Seriously, bring some mobile object (e.g. a bike) and go around until you see a couple. Get off, and get your tennis racket out. Kablammo! Wham! Onomatopoeia!!

Sweet merciful crap, I couldn't stop laughing after reading that.

Magpies in Toronto aren't quite that crazy, but I was once chased by an angry swan.

I've heard that if you put big fake eyes (just contrasting colour round stickers) on your helmet it scares them off...

Spray the air with enough 9mm lead slugs and most any critter, flying or naught, tends to leave you alone even if they survive the onslaught.

A black and white bird about 3/4 the size of a raven (at least the Australian ones are), that gets a tad vicious during nesting season. Cyclists are often a target. They attack the head and neck of whomever happens to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

g'day all,

we seem to be thru the worst of it down south this year......a few weeks ago i had 2 'tag teaming' me for about a KM...barstards taking it in turns to see who could knock my lid off...thankfully looks like they've calmed down. although i heard today on the news one got a cyclist & knocked him off (dunno the details)...who was then hit by a car!...gotta love these birds!....with an axe!

Not to make light of the subject, but Heckle and Jeckle. "Listen to the mockingbird, listen to the mockingbird"...........I digress, couldn't help it.

What the hell is a cane toad? Do they eat magpies or are they poisonous to magpies if eaten by them?
