Are you a cyclo fanatic?

I really am, maybe because I'm really young and haven't had the chance to experience much of the mountain bike trails, tours, road rides that are out there.
I realized it last night when my date mentioned bike and I went crazy talking about her bike and how it sucks, and I should build her a bike, then we'd ride all the time, and she could also commute to work from her house, blah blah blah...

Right now I'm trolling the website looking at cool stuff, dreaming about buying parts for my current project. Also thinking about buying cycle-centric presents for my two best friends who I forced into buying bikes, then into commuting; now I ridicule them for not bicycling in the cold weather. I'm going to Orlando to see my older brother for the new years and I'm wondering how I can get him interested in off-road cycling within 3 days, since he once showed interest in riding my rockhopper (turned off by clipless pedals) and we're not similar in any way so we never talk.

I realize many people on bike forums are into backpacking, kayaking, skiing, and many other sports; but bicycling is my only consistent outdoor activity (though i'd love to build a kit kayak) and I'm mad about it. Right now I'm gonna go eat brunch while admiring the lines of my road bike and planning upgrades on the mud rig. Are you crazy?

Probably...I have 26 working bikes and 4-6 more undergoing rehab and rebuild.

Hi my name is Aaron and I have a bike problem....:innocent:

How long after the "your bike sucks" comment did she hang around?

My brother (who also lives in Orlando) and I don't talk much either. Maybe its something in the water down there.

Noobtastic 12-25-10 12:02 AM

Wow, chill out guys, you can't judge a personality through the internet. I told my date her bike sucks because she decided to commute by bike after totaling her car; she bought all the necessary gear and bought a walmart bike, then gave up on riding because "riding the bike was too hard" (she rode it 4 times). We went out again today; because I don't beat around the bush, and am also totally sexy.

I ridicule my friends because we're teenage males and its what we do, if I hurt their feelings then they're freakin wimps; I'm the harmless guy who talks to his dog in the weird baby voice for baby christ's sake. Also, I guess "forced" is a strong word to use, "pestered" is much better, these friends of mine were well introduced to the soaring eagle feeling before I gave them the final push.

I got all excited to see posts in my thread but few are on topic, seems like an interesting topic too.

I'd love to get to that point where its like owning a classic car collection, riding a different horse everyday of the month. Do you mind posting some of your favorites?

Were that my daughter a few years older! You sound like quite a catch.

JimF22003 12-25-10 04:53 AM

Keep the cyclo part and just dial back on the fanatic a couple of notches and you'll be fine.

Here is the basic line up, along with the 4 I ride the most, but that changes as other bikes get fixed up. The last bike gets honorable mention, because it has been with me since 1982 and has over 30,000 miles on it. It has been misused and abused but with a bit of TLC always comes back for more.

Aaron :)

I get obsessed with different hobbies every few years. Cycling is on the wane with me. My new obsession is with running but I don't care about the gear. Just running. There is something wrong with me.

Northwestrider 12-25-10 12:33 PM

It's a passion, fanatical cyclist, I'd have to say, not yet as I enjoy many other outdoor activities.

fietsbob 12-25-10 12:33 PM

I have a number of Ex GFs I built up bikes for , over the decades,
they wanted me to buy them houses

But my Bosses all wanted me to pay for their houses ,
by not paying me what it cost to even afford rent.

Welcome to the Web! I don't know if I'd call myself crazy, but others might. I stopped counting bikes when the N+1 exceeded a dozen. Various stages of assembly, but I keep a few--3 or 4, ready to ride whenever I can.

DVC45 12-26-10 07:55 PM

I have 8 bikes. I only ride 2 of them. Crazy? Maybe.

I'm a CL bike surfer.

Here's a nice one you might want to collect.

xtrajack 12-27-10 08:30 AM

I have 7 of my own that are rideable, Although I ride the Xtracycle 99.99% of the time. I also have another 4 or 5 in various states of readiness.
My wife has three, she doesn't ride any of them.
I am not sure what that says about us. It doesn't really matter, I'm a happy camper.,

BTW, Aaron I love the black Giant.

raydog 12-27-10 10:12 AM

Good for you on your passion, don't worry about any negative comments on here. For some reason some forum folks lurk and use legitimate posts as a medium for sarcasm and attempts at humor. Otherwise, there are hundreds of intelligent, knowledgable and friendly people here!
BTW, I have a touring bike, a racer, and a mountain bike....and am building a steel training/rolling/indoor bike. Yeah, it's fun, all of it! Just don't worry about hard selling your sport, modeling is the most powerful way of convincing others. Raydog

This is definitely my favorite one, Aaron. It's the spitting image of my dream touring/commuting bike, except I might prefer 3 speeds and am terrified by toe clips. I also love the black one with all the baskets; kinda like my singlespeed is to me, I imagine that it's your batmobile.

This is my batmobile (no braze-ons, for ultra-speed); sometimes I feel like I'm restoring a rusty old datsun sports car, but it hasn't let me down yet.

Nice catch, I am not worthy sensei. I left a message on his machine as soon as I saw deore xt, but what kind of mountain bike is this?

+1. Me like too :)

Sixty Fiver 12-27-10 01:03 PM

My friends call me a raving bike fiend.

Can't understand why.

wahoonc 12-28-10 03:19 PM

Actually that Giant is a plum color, not sure why it shows up black. It started life as a Euro spec city bike with flat handle bars, but that was the only change I made to it. Racks, lights and fenders are standard fare in the EU.

Aaron :)

Its a short lived MTB design. I have the Haro version of it. Some say it has a flexy ride. I never notice that on mine as I only use mine for commuting.
