Can't respond to a Private Message / PM

There is no help forum, and I can't PM a moderator, so I have no choice but to post this here... there's just no forum for it.

Help, someone sent me a private message and I can't even respond!?

I can't even let them know I recieved it or in any other way contact them. How messed up is that?

"An error has occurred! You must have 50 posts in order send Private Messages. Your current post count is 44."

I guess I have to make six more posts before I can reply to a private message!?

You don't need 50 posts for visitor messages. You can post one on the person's profile page.

Why do you need to PM a mod? Sounds serious.

Cbad, when joining a forum, it is VERY difficult to find the sorts of things you pointed out. Heck, I've been here for seven years and didn't know you could post a PM on a person's profile page, because I very rarely ever go to a profile page. In fact, I think that has all come from the last "upgrade", and we all know how badly that went.

RonH, his PM to a moderator was in the context of wanting help, not for a problem.

This site is not particularly intuitive.

And hopefully they see it. AFAIK there is no notification system for visitor messages.

I know the reasoning behind the no PM until after 50's posts but there should be a way to override that if the person proves not to be a spammer.

After having a thread deleted this morning regarding the 50 posts to pm rule I received a suggestion on how to communicate until I have 50 posts.
Why don't you just write to the person of your choice through their profile messages? That's what it's there for.
SO it's something that should be addressed I think. I wonder how many people have tried and given up and good memeber of the site was lost?

Regards
Gavin

fair enough comment....

If I had been given the information about how to send a message via their profile then I would have done that. The site failed to do that or let me know that was even an option.

The error message is very clear that "An error has occurred! You must have 50 posts in order send Private Messages."
It is not obvious that a message sent via their profile is not a "private" message??? See how the wording of the error message does not indicate any other options.

From my perspective with the information I was given, I only did what I thought I had to do to reply to a private message sent to me.... offering parts I needed for my project.

agustanz, I am editing your post and giving you the benefit of the doubt on this one. Typically posting a private message results in an instant ban.

Can you please direct me to the site posting rule book?
I just looked for it and only found the FAQ section.

The rule regarding posting private messages is in the FAQ section. Here is a link to it.

It is under "disruption".

Posts which intend to disrupt the topic of conversation or steer the topic away from the focus of the forum and related news. Disruption can include harassment, multiple user profiles, multiple posting of the same post and posting completely off topic messages. Please do your best when it comes to grammar, punctuation and spelling. Excessive use of "AOL'ese" and "hAx0r" talk can be very disruptive so please keep it to a minimum. Private messages are to be kept private and never posted in the forums.

Just so you know, there is a thread over in the road forum titled Addiction, you can chat in there for an hour or so and easily have your 50 posts. Just go in there, introduce yourself, then say that you are trying to get your posts. I would be willing to bet that the members there would be happy to help you out.

You may even make a virtual friend or two.

I was going to say "incorrect", but you did say AFAIK...

In the upper right corner of the BF screen you'll see the "Welcome" message. Right next to it is the "Notifications:" pull down menu. Any visitor messages, or PM, or incoming friend requests, and you'll see it in Notifications. The menu changes color when you have unread stuff in there, making it more visible.

My notification bar ONLY shows when I have a PM. I don't recall ever seeing a visitor message notification or incoming friend request displayed there. I also checked my settings are there are no settings for notifications of anything other than PM's.

For me, the pop up window saying "you have a new message" only shows for PMs. For anything else, no pop up, but definitely a change in the appearance of the notification bar. Leaving you a visitor message now for testing...
