I am not entirely sure how long/far I have been riding each session (only just installed adroid app My Tracks 1 hour ago - after my 2 hour riding session).

Anyways, my first run out I decided to push myself and ride to work (4 stations away, am guessing around 15-25KM or so).

I noticed around 10km into the ride my left pinky and ring finger getting tingly. Right pinky and ring also, but to lesser extent.

After a few daily sessions since then, including this morning I have noticed that at around the 10 km or so mark the tingling sensation returns.

And because of this, I found this thread. I actually read through the whole thing... lots of interesting ideas (I especially enjoyed the part where if we turn to the Dark Side our problems will go away - big star wars fan.)

Anyways, for me (not pro by any means... yet) I believe the combination of being 99kg @ 190cm (bit overweight, but have dropped 4 KG in 1 week due to cycling and diet change), as well as seat being roughly the same vertical height as bars is what is causing it for me.

The shop guy mentioned the shaft thingy that raises the handles being short, and that if i wanted to raise it, I would need to purchase some extra widget or somethin.

So, since I read all you peoples input on OPs post I am now headed to the shop to have them order the shaft extension device (a metal tube I am assuming).

Thanks everyone for the input in this thread, i am sure there are many more who have benefited from reading it - but remained silent. I came here to rectify that situation (1 voice > 0)

Cheers,

Brad

I too have read the whole post since I have pins and needles in my hands when I ride. I will trying the angle with my seat the next time I get out to ride to see if that makes a difference.

thanks to everyone's input on this three it has been informative to this newbi.

As already noted, overdoing the padding (on chamois, gloves, saddle, or wherever) can put pressure on body parts not meant to handle it.

You could always try riding in the drops--raise the bars a bit if you have to--which distributes the pressure a little differently.
Riders choice, either you want lower back problems or hand numbness. I'd rather save my back, this is why I use my arms to lift my massive body of massiveness so my poor ol' back can relax after 10 hours of throwing around 50 pounds 450 times. And no, I don't get numbness for half a freaking day. That's coz I knowz how to move me hanz around and let bloodz flow into emz durinz a ridez. DO I NEED AN DEGREE FOR DIS???? PLS TELL MEEEH!?!?!

You should at least try something like this:

I've got the ultimate solution for hand numbness

Attach some helium balloon around your chest ... no more pressure on your wrists

I think my hands were just in shock... picked up some lightly padded (with biogel!) brand gloves (Pearl Izumi). It has helped to diffuse *SOME* pressure. I've also learned that it is a good idea to shake your hands at stops a bit to get stuff flowing. Some people are dismissing the gloves, but if you think about the physics of hand vs hard and undersized handlebar (for my MTB at least), the energy between the 2 will be diffused slightly with a little bit of padding i am sure.

I also adjusted the seat as well, but I figure the biggest difference will be when I get the new shaft thingy that will raise my handle bars up about 8cm or so.... the part is apparently obscure, so I have to wait another week just for them to find it. Actually told them if they couldnt get it I would return the bike and buy another one from a competitor (have the right to, as its under a 60 day return guarantee etc etc).

Another thing I noticed is a noticable increase in my forearm muscles, which I am attributing to actual exercise. Seems to make the ride smoother and easier.

I keep hearing about Core this and Core that... so I decided to get some dumbbells and work on upper torso to tighten it up a bit as well.

Also ordered a suit of Pearl Izumi tight-clothing stuff (pants and top jersey), as well as some pretty cool mizuno shoes (had to order from US Amazon as I require 11.5 and Japan Amazon dont have it). Looking forward to trying out the SPD thingy with the pedals (which I also ordered, dual platform/SPD so I can use without SPD shoes).

Will be nice to go out riding and not look TOTALLY newb, which if you saw me (i wear jogging clothing while riding) you'd laugh.

I'm sure there will be more things I can think of to improve my time/distance, but just the fact I'm doing 24-36km every 2nd day has made my body weight drop like a stone. Better eating habits also help.

Now I just have to actually STOP smoking.... for real... I feel its limiting me - especially uphill. Thats like the king of uphills for me... sigh
