What will keep you from riding? For me, It's an infected toe that doesn't allow me to put my foot in a shoe without excruciating pain. I can't clip in without my shoes

I put rubber-block pedals on my commuting/city bike, just so I could ride barefoot now and then (no helmet too!). Feels great.

Not lately though, as it's 20ºF and about three inches of snow outside.

And if I do it very much even in summer, I've found that my feet get sunburned. :|
Fun for a while though.

They do make other kinds of pedals...and sandals to fit clipless (what a misnomer) pedals.

i love riding, just like everyone else on this board... but, the one thing that keeps me off the bike(layed up in bed with heating pad right now) is my damn lower back. diagnosed with 'degenerative disc disease' a couple of years ago... and the pain is flocking awful sometimes. so, i can't ride as much as i would like: pisses me off too...

edit: not sure this qualifies as an 'injury' though.

But seriously...I fell on some icy steps in December breaking 3 ribs and 3 vertebrae in my spine. That kept me off the bike.

I do hope you're seeing a doctor. My wife just had two toes amputated due to infections.

Reminds me of a few years ago; I wasn't riding then anyway.

I had an ingrown toenail that was almost bad enough tho make me go to the doctor. My Mom called and said she had a flat tire on her car; could I go over and put on the spare for her. I threw my 40 pound floor-jack in the trunk and drove over to my parents' house to fix it. When I got home, I pulled the floor-jack out of the trunk to put it away. The handle slipped out when it was about 18 inches high and it dropped right on my ingrown toenail. The toe felt like it had exploded. I saw stars. It was one of those times it even hurts too much to cuss. I left the floor-jack where it was and went inside. I told my wife what happened and that I needed help. She asked what she could do. I told her to go put the jack away, lock up the car, and shut the front gate. 2 surgeries, lots of antibiotics, and a couple of months later it was all better.
That would have kept me off the bike.

I've been to the doctor 4 times. I'm on 3 different antibiotics and had my toenail removed. It still isn't getting better. Its even hard to stand or be active because all the blood rushed to my feet and it stings like heck.

just take a needle and jab it into the infected part, squeeze the green nasty out of it,soak in peroxide, then go back to your doc for a tetanus(how's that spelled anyway)shot and you'll be fine. I skipped the last part myself, but I survived anyway.

I keep growing urethral strictures in the stretch of urethra that runs through my penis. Seems the bike saddle just aggrivates the chronic problem. Now, what's that about your wife needing a couple amputations???

Hand surgery to put a plate and screws on two metacarpals. Rode one handed a week or two later and then went back to my commnute. Was getting edgy without riding.

Rubber pedals are cheap, a lot of online dealers sell them. I think pricepoint.com have the least expensive. You should be warned though that you're likely to never going back to clipins again as the freedom of setting your feet where they want to be will surely grow on you.

I'm picturing you putting your foot down to stabilize your bike in an emergency. Your toes'd be forcibly curled under the ball of your foot and you'd get road rash on the tops of your toes. Ow.

Nope, never happened. It's mainly just the sunburn.

Unless I ride at night, of course. But then I have to turn of the headlight when there's no cars around, since I ride on rural roads and I have found through experimentation that leaving the headlight on draws a lot of bugs in.

I was going to say broken left leg, but i have done that. You just ride slow, and you ride the fixed gear.
I think I can win this one unfortunately.

40 stitches in my face, broken eye socket, and my right ear being held on with a cotton ball kept me off my bike for about a week. I couldn't turn my neck or hear out of my right ear. Plus my primary road bike was in the shop waiting for a new fork. So I only had my fixed gear. My hand was too weak to work the brakes, and I didn't see any "MAD SKIDDZZ" till I healed up at least a little. Did all this from running my road bike face first into a steel trash can. The trash can won.
