I figure there can't be any harm in having a beefy bike and the fact of the matter is I will probably remain at atleast 200lbs...I am not a small person frame wise by any means. People tell me some of these frames are made for people who weigh like 140lbs...

Well everyone I placed a bid on a Kona Hoss Dee-Lux 2004 model. Tell you how I like it, if I get it.

Have you checked out the Weight Loss thread in the Training and Nutrition forum? It is a great place to post your progress once you get rolling. Good luck on your journey, and I am envious of your new bike!

Also...I got to thinking about my weigh and all, would there be a stronger crank or something I should look into? stronger pedals? etc? I'm not sure of the parts names. Kevin, my friend who is pretty into biking said I'll have to get some shoes to ride the bike. Anyways..yeah info?

Dude. As mentioned before many of us are/were in the same boat you are!

Come on over to the Weight loss Thread in Training & Nutrition Forum here on BF. Its a great place to get motivated, help others, and learn lots.

Sorry I don't have a bike recommendation for you, but I must say that after looking at the Kona Hoss, I am impressed.

Hope to see you over in the WLC.

Bob

That clydesdale bike seems like a good place to start. If you get really into riding, you'll probably upgrade after some time. It's all part of the fun! A lot of us here used to be a LOT bigger, so you've got proof here that you can do it! Congratulations and good luck!

Exercise bikes and actual "cycling" are worlds apart. One is work, the other is... well, there's a reason people wrap their lifestyle around cycling.

A friend of mine makes this mistake -- doing indoor spinning on an exercise bike, and saying that he hates the cardio part of his workout. Well, of course he hates it! It's all the work but a small percentage of the benefits of cycling.

Here's the solution: once you recover some riding skill and get the bike tweaked to where you can trust it, (remember to pay attention to the wheels), find a mild offroad trail to spend a few hours riding and you'll get a harder workout than you could ever imagine yourself doing. You'll see what I mean when I say the two types of workout are worlds apart.

It'll be impossible to wipe the smile off your face and you'll be dying to hit the trail again next week. ...and the workout will be quite intense. Then if you get a carrying system and use the bike for regular errand running, that's all you'll ever need for regular exercise. And it's as enjoyable as taking a roller-coaster to work. I'm 36 years old and my doctor stated that I was "fit, extremely fit" and that's from regular utility riding with some occasional day trips thrown in now and then, nothing fancy, (no touring or 100+ mile days in the recent past).

FYI, I took a look at your website and saw a computer with the guts exposed. If you're into the "inner workings" of things, get Jobst Brandt's book, "The Bicycle Wheel." It's the best there is, as it will answer any possible question you have -- and learn to maintain wheels yourself. It's quite an enjoyable thing to maintain and possibly build your own wheelset.

Again, remember not to get too much into the "watts produced/ calories burned" type of thing, because, (unless you're the type of person who's into that), that can kill the thing about riding that makes you want to do it. Unless you're a numbers/ stats type of person, then go nuts.

bahahaha. I love to work on PCs, Cars, Whatever I CANNOT stand the idea of paying someone to fix something of mine. I keep the side of the case off b/c at one point I was overclocking it to well over 2400MHz and it's stock @ 2.16 and I was using a stock cooler. Then I finally upgraded and got the a newer aftermarket one that I've been quite impressed with. Anyways...yeah I'll probably look into some kind of book about bikes.

I don't know the geometry of the Kona but you might want to go into a bike shop to have them fit you. You're a big guy and fit matters a lot.

Oh oh oh oh!! If you like to hack already on your computers.. (Your monitor on the right look like it might fall off if you sneeze too hard! be careful.. heh)

Wait until you start hacking on your bike... I got back into biking after a 6 year layoff (I gave it up when my last good bike got stolen, and then got busy with starting up a new IT company), and got my first specialized hardrock like your friend, last summer.

It's like a drug. You can't stop hacking your bike.. fiddling with all the doodads you can find to fiddle with.. Its not really that difference from swapping your stock OEM computer parts and dabbling in the dark voodoo of overclocking and riding the edge of sanity.

Congrats, and I hope to see you in the biking club very soon!!!

Regards,

Tim

bahahahah you peoples actually check out my homepage. That's great...that was my brother's computer I was ****ing with and it never did fall off. As far as my bike, I got the total today and it ships tomorrow. I got a KICK ARSE DEAL 792.63 delivered to my door step for the 2004 Kona Hoss Dee-Lux model I'm really happy considering it would have been 1250 dollars at the store closest to me. Anyways I will def. get some pix of it on my homepage and then I'll take it for a ride and see how well I like it. Someone recommended a double bolt something for my seat/post? any idea about that jibberish? I don't ever hack (ROFL) that's bad.

HUMUHUMU-NUKANUKA-A-PUA'A DELUXE?

HooMooHooMoo-NooCanooka-A-PooA-A???

CONGRATS! That is a good deal! I strongly agree with slvoid though, before taking it on any significant rides, you should still find yourself a good bike shop and make sure the bike actually fits you! If it doesn't (and assuming the frame size isn't waaaay too big/small for you), they can change things out like stems, seatposts, etc. so it does. If you bypass this step and the bike doesn't fit you well, you're in for a lot of pain which will eventually lead to you not wanting to ride at all. And notice I'm not talking about just soreness - which everyone goes through when they first start riding - but full-on PAIN from your knees, hips, arms, back, etc. And it's a pain that may not show up immediately, it's gradual - like running tires on a car out of alignment. Get the bike fit...

Also, you might spend some time on Cycling Forums looking for posts by Chalo Colina.
He frequently shares alternative equipment choices he has made for his own bikes,
including strong wheels, BMX cranks, strong frames, and comfortable saddles. Last I
read of him, he was in the 350-400# range and shares very freely his experiences.

I am going to take it to the LBS to have them fit it and all that good crap. I might even look into some road type tires since i won't be offroad a ton.

I'm going to suggest that you get a set of 26 x 2.1 Cruiser style tires. I would NOT put a set of skinny slicks on it if I were you.

A suggestion https://www.mtbr.com/reviews/Tire/product_84991.shtml

No no no.. Hacking is good... Cracking is bad. See the story behind my avatar at: https://www.catb.org/hacker-emblem/ especially check out the "How to become a hacker" section. Hacking has had its image tarnished by the media who don't understand the difference between fiddling with technology for the pure joy of it and trespassing and breaking into systems for malicious harm.

I don't do THAT kind of "hacking" at all. If you put my comment about hacking your bike into that context it would make no sense to "hack your new bike" but in the traditional sense, it does

But I digress from your topic big time.. .sorry, pardon me. I can be a little too senstitive about the hackers image. hehe

CONGRATS on that great deal you got, I am jealous! That is one FRIGGIN NICE BIKE! I considered it for myself.

Let us know how you like it!

Those are the kind of tires I would like to get...something a little less knobby if you know what I mean? I can still manage to go through something, but at the same time they're not totally knobby tires....also what about fenders? Any suggestions?

Also..since I'm such a big guy, would it be better to get some form of a solid fork...will I ruin this fork from being so heavy? I know it's meant for bigger guys but I thought I might just ask...I wasn't sure how much life the shocks have in em...

probably for off roading and **** you'd be right...I was looking into a bike that would handle me for on road riding....not to abuse the bike. LoL. If this bike can withstand a 280lb guy bashing the living **** out of it, then for on road use this will most likely work.

I'm not sure I agree with that part of your post... At 215 pounds, I am sure I put much more weight in force than 400 when I land even a 1.5 foot drop on a bike. So I'm not sure that is correct that 400# is too much for that Kona.

Then again, I'm definately not a math orientated person. So here's my grain of salt.

You gotta understand, anything Merton says has to be taken wth a spoonful of salt. He was once on par with the 53-11 guy.
