5, in no particular order:
1) Race bike
2) Rain bike (was my old race bike)
3) Vintage race bike (for sunny days only)
4) FG (converted old race bike)
5) CX bike
Still need a TT bike, a true track bike, a tandem, and a balloon-tire cruiser.

Four but only three are in full commission:
2010 Norco City Glide- urban machine for commuting, errands and generally hacking about. Hope to get Mrs Nelson on it this summer
1997 Mongoose Hilltopper - my winter ride and I use it for longer distance commutes (when I work out of town).
2006 Surly Cross-check - I use this bike for all my recreational riding everything from road rides to hitting rail trails. Not is the same class as a thoroughbred race bike but it's robust enough to put up with the crappy roads around here (and my weight).

I have two single recumbents, a hybrid that my son rides, a recumbent tandem that my wife/stoker and I ride and a tandem that we used to ride. (For Sale!) My wife has hybrid. Not currently out of control or out of space.

Truly? You have an 1984, Carlsbad-made Gran Criterium? My Rosebud hung at the ceiling of my LBS during my highschool years, while I drooled over it hopelessly as a USCF junior and Albertson's courtesy clerk (bagger) making $4.35/hr.
The frame hung up there until I came home on leave from the Army in 1988 and (the words still make me tingle) IT WAS STILL HANGING UP THERE. I immediately bought it then and it was my primary racer and transportation during my three years stationed in Holland (in Limburg, near Maastricht) and Colorado Springs.

born again cyclist
Three:
1996 Raleigh M-80 mountain bike (now my hybridized winter/back-up commuter)
2007 Dahon Speed P-8 folder
2010 Motobecane LeChampion SL Ti road bike (fair weather commuter)
and that's pretty much the limit of what my small downtown condo will comfortable hold. if i got any more bikes i'd either have to sell one of my current bikes, start storing some of them out on the balcony (i could never be cruel to a bicycle like that), or move to a bigger home.

1) 3-speed step-through mountain bike turned commuter, rescued from the dump.
2) Raleigh Scorpion that used to belong to my dad, currently awaiting some drop bars.
3) Rhino 'Tribe' 24" BMX, cast off by a neighbour and restored by me.
The first two may exchange some parts at some point- the Scorpion may become a drop-bar 3-speed, with the step-through gaining some North Roads and the Scorpion's 2x5 derailleur gearing.
As you can see, I've never spent a significant amount of money on cycling. The most expensive item was probably the 3-speed hub and associated spokes (both from ebay.)

My Trek 800 set up as a commuter, presently out of commission until tomorrow morning as it's in need of a tube and I'm out; my Schwinn Traveller 12-speed, my longer distance commuter with a swell Brooks saddle; my Motobecan Jubilee Sport, my fast bike, presently out of commission awaiting the new tires and tubes I've got for her; my Puch 3-speed, my upright ride, to be worn while wearing a sport coat and tie on a windless day; and my Fuji Palisades, single speed conversion -- just a cool getting around fast and easy kinda bike. What's that make, five?

I have 6 + one frame.
The Xtracycle, she gets all the bike bling, attention, and miles.
3 vintage mountain bikes (Specialized Hard Rock, Univega, and one that I don't know the lineage of.)
2 road bikes, I also have a Ross Professional Gran Tour frame, some day it is going to be a touring bike.
My wife has a Day 6 comfort bike, a mixte frame Shogun and a Schwinn mountain bike.
We also have about a half dozen miscellaneous frames and parts kicking around.
