Bicycle anecdotes

There’s something about bicycling thats magical and adventuresome, be it a day trip or a cross country tour. It seems to bring out curiosity, friendliness and kindness in people...well ok not always...Tell us one of your bicycle stories, a few sentences or a few paragraphs, a small adventure, perhaps some mishap, maybe an unexpected turn of events. Here’s one of mine.
We were well along on our cross country tour and were crossing through the bitterroots. We had learned how to adjust brakes and derailleurs, change tires and chains. We even learned how to pop spokes by carrying too much junk. So by this time we were very “experienced” touring cyclists and quite confident that we had the all mechanics well under control. Well one day we broke camp and headed out west as always and soon found ourselves coming down out of the hills on a very long and fast descent. After a few miles of some speedy and very fun downhill riding we pulled up to a general store. My partner lifted his bike so as to raise the front wheel onto a sidewalk and we both watched in amazement as the front wheel simply fell off! It just fell right out of the fork as he lifted the bike. The quick release was loose and, well, definitely quick. Had he hit a big bump or anything like that going down that hill it could have been bad news! That’s how we learned about checking our bikes for safety, at least once in a while.

I had a lousy day at work. At the end of the day I walked out the door and got on my bike. In the parking lot I pedaled a few strokes, leaned into a lazy right turn, coasted down a small slope, and was happy. Like magic, only real.

A nice fall ride last year up the road a ways, into the mountains. Idyllic morning really, only to be nearly jarred off my bike by two enormous mules crashing down off the mountianside, through the forest, and across the road in front of me.

I turned around to herd them through the gate and back onto their owner's property, until that is, I saw the mountain lion crash out of the forest and across the road in hot pursuit of said mules.

Mules were on their own.

I had a feeling there were some good stories out there! And here I am worried about the occasional growling dog in the city.
