I just has my garage finished (drywall, paint, etc) and am looking for a clean way to store my bikes - preferably one that involves hanging them on the wall in some manner. Due to the number of bikes I need to store, if they're hung on the wall they need to go two deep. My old method was just a pair of padded bars that stuck out from the wall (L-shaped, with the top of the L screwed to a 1x that was in turn screwed to the studs) but I was looking for something a bit less unsightly.

I'm trying to avoid the methods that involve hanging the bike by the front tire as that sort of takes up space in my work area.

Any suggestions?

I need the same sort of thing...though I need only go one deep. Hanging from the tire means I'll have kids ramming their heads into the all the time, which is bad for the bikes....

so i read your post and took a picture of my setup, i then re-read your post and i guess mine is kind of what you said you didn't want..but since i took the picture here it is anyway.

I had a similar dilimma a while back and solved my storage problem with a rolling A-frame set-up. And it has a removable service stand (actually a service "bar" ).

Guess I should add; this rack is made entirely of 2 x 6s; although I wish I had used either two of them for the top piece or a 2 x 8 or 2 x 10 as it is already beginning to bow in the middle. There's a good chance I will have to make some modification in the very near future. I would also use slightly larger casters; the 3" from Harbor Frieght seem a little hard to roll so I'm probably going to switch those out with some 6" .

there's the block and tackle and run them in the overhead approach..
you would need a high ceiling.

Holy cow that thing is awesome! Definitely something to think about.

As far as the hoist method, my garage ceiling is only 8'6 high, so not that much overhead room.

Almost all bikes have a balance point just about where the seatpost is. So they can be hung and supported simply by the nose of the seat being hoocked over a tube.

If that works for you than some threaded galvanized pipe, some tee joints, a few anchor plates and you can suspend a rail from the ceiling. Covering the rail with foam insulation (also intended for plumbing instalations) will completely protect the seat.

This is commonly used in bike shops both in the service areas and ocassionally in the showroom so its extremely functional.

I have the same problem, and one length of wall has counter height workbench already. I'm thinking maybe I'll hang a couple of bike on hooks with both tires touching the ceiling over the workbench. But since they are 61CM, the drop might make the space unusable. I need a third garage bay...

Maybe a shallow storage shed on the side of the house? I can't get my head around how to store these bikes...

Nice thing about not being married: I store my bike in the dining room with the table making a great to work. My GF keeps her bike in her DR as well.

I picked up several "Y" style hangers from the local hardware store (Home Depot carrys em..$9.99 each)
mounted two push plates (6x6x 1") to the end of a cut to fit 2x4 and installed the Y brackets spacing each so the upper bike wouldn't interfer with the lower and both were off the floor.
Have a friend who did something similar using two sets of the 2x4 trees with the Y which allowed him to place 4 bikes in the center of an unused hallway and have easy access to each.

I started off along that route, but my problem ends up being the number of bikes I have vs the amount of space I want to take up. The Y hangers hold one bike each, so with seven bikes to hang, it ends up being a lot of wall space.

I'm leaning toward installing hooks in the ceiling to hang the bikes from upside down by the hoops. The only problem would be getting up there and adding some 2x4s between the studs (studs are never where you want them!) as it'll be way in the corner of the crawl space, and the ceiling isn't very pitched. Talk about ouchies from roofing nails!
