I bought my bike 10 days ago and got my first flat after 75 miles of riding. I am so glad all my gear came in a few days ago... I actually had no idea how to change the tube out since I didn't think to research, but it was very easy and straight forward. Watched some videos when I got back home and I pretty much did the same thing.

The "flak jacket" protection on my Specialized All Condition Sport tires didn't seem that resilient since I pulled a tiny rock (that wasn't very sharp) out of the tire. If I get another puncture or two before I hit 500 miles should I look at something a little tougher? Continental Gators or Specialized Borough cx?

I frequently ride in New York City, notorious for broken glass everywhere. For this kind of environment, Specialized Armadillo tires have served me well. Never got a puncture with them.

Armadilloes are kind of heavy though, with thicker layers of puncture-resistant kevlar lining than the Flak Jacket series of tires. The 700x23c All-Condition Armadilloes weigh around 440 grams per tire.
