Tire Size for Trek Navigator 200 - HELP - Trying to go skinnier!
Hi,
So I'm trying to get back into cycling, and my fiance wanted to do it with me. She has a Trek Navigator 200 hybrid. The tires are dry-rotted and we wanted to put something skinnier and smoother on there.
So, I looked up her wheel which is a 559x20, and read that I could put a 26x1 1/4-1 3/8 inch tire on there. So I bought two tires and matching tubes.
Well, the tires wont fit. I started with the tube inflated a little bit, but I couldn't get it going. I tried just the tire and with it beaded it looks like it's substantially too big. Double checked the tire to make sure it was the correct one and it is.
What am I missing here?

Does the new tire say 559 somewhere on the side? What is it labeled? There are multiple different "26 inch" tire sizes.
A 26x1.5"/559-40 would be lighter and skinnier than what was stock in 2006 - 26 x 1.95".

26 x 1 1/4 - 1 3/8 I believe is an oddball size (Fits the old 26 x 1 3/8 Schwinn S-5 & S-6 rims)
I wouldn't go smaller than 26 x 1.5 on a Navigator. They're comfort bikes with a fairly low bottom bracket and you might be affecting ground clearance with super skinny tires.

You might think that 26 X 1 1/4 = 26 X 1.25 but, if you're talking bike tires, it doesn't.
You need tires that have decimal sizeing.

Thanks for the help. We have decided that we are just going to take it to the LBS, even if it is a little more expensive and just have them do it. (I HATE paying other people to do things for me - not about the money, it's the principle)
Anyways, thanks all.
