Kryptolok warranty question

I plan to get a kryptolok. I read that it's best to get a second one, get a welder to cut it, and register the serial number as the one you're using.

Then actually use the second one, since thieves typically take the lock with them. Is this just a bad idea?

That's a new one. Where did you hear/read that?

haha, from a comment on amazon...he said he buys 2, gets one cut, so he can use it to claim his bike was stolen ... if his second one (the one he uses), actually gets cut, but the thief doesn't leave it...and his bike is stolen.

Why would the thief take the broken lock with them? That seems unlikely.

Not sure how? Bicyclist buys 2 krypto NY locks, gets one cut, registers that one with krypto and warranty. Uses another one, so if/when his bike gets stolen (and the thief takes his lock as well), he can still claim it.

how do you explain to Kryptonite that the 'perp' used an acetylene torch to cut your lock in front of the starbucks where you work in but no one saw anything?

This just seems like a scam somehow to me. If you want to buy two, buy two. If you want to ride with the one you haven't registered do that. But it doesn't seem to make much sense to me to cut the backup one until you know you'll need it cut. Seems like a waste of a perfectly good lock and you can always get it cut after the bike is stolen if you need to. Or just park it somewhere lower risk.

Yeah ... cut it whenever you want. The idea is they can still claim on krypto's warranty to replace their bike.

Carbide cut-off disc in a power-saw would do it,
would need to be a pretty powerful motor
Don't think a cordless saw will do it in a quick time..

chop saw with a disc is how steel is cut, in production, for small stock.

inch thick or thereabouts.

Exactly, so if it's possible, and a bike is stolen that way ... as well as the lock. I think the theory is, they just want to have krypto pay because the lock got cut, which krypto says they would.

well, if kryptonite's policy is to only pay if it gets cut and you don't know how it was bypassed, then cutting a lock yourself is sort of cheating them, no?

I think you're giving the post on Amazon more validity than it deserves.

it is implied but not explicitly stated in this thread that Kryptonite requires a piece of the defeated lock be returned to them as proof of lock failure
