One surrounding city here has a big three day motorcycle event. Actually two,one that is for men,the other going to the women bikers. We do have a bicycle race,but it's not built up to be a big event. Usaully the only time you here about it is after it's over.I think they could make a big bicycle event if they wantd to. While motorcycles are everywhere here,bikes are also seen a lot. They could have a criterium race,a road race,and a mountain bike race in three days.Plus bring in some BMX freestlylists to show off their skills. And food,don't forget,lots of food and accesserioes to sell!

One distinction is that the big motorcycle events that I'm aware of are not races in any way. So every guy that owns a motorcycle is able to attend. Set up some actual motorcycle racing, and i suspect you'll have a good bit less interest.

The bicycle equivalent is the charity ride, which they have quite a few of around here. The size and participation depend largely on the population that's nearby, so if you have two or three million people within 50 miles, you can get a couple of thousand out for a ride.

Every June our city holds a month long bike festival called "Bikeology" and there are official events happening nearly every day as well as many unofficial events.

After that the bike fun just keeps going throughout the summer.

Stage 1 of the Amgen Tour of California usually ends here. This year it was supposed to be Stage 2, but due to the cancellation of the high altitude Stage 1 due to weather, we got the finish of the first stage. Here's my footage of that.

The weekend before the ATOC, the Bicycle Film Festival paid us a visit. Here's some interesting footage from that. It's a single-speed/fixed gear trick competition. It was hated on bigtime in the SS/FG subforum, so I deleted the thread and disabled ratings before anyone could give the video a thumbs-down.

I guess you wouldn't need races.....you could have a bicycle poker run! One thing about the motorcycles rallies down here,especially the Bike,Blues & BBQ lots of non-motorcyclists attend. Our area talks about "Going Green",and what better way to promote going green, than the bicycle? No fumes,easy transportation,cheap in cost( comparing to a $30,000 SUV) and fun to ride. Yes,a big charity ride would be cool too. Maybe I'll have to spread the news around. I'm sure if you add a lot together to go with bicycles it might attract more than you think.

THe city of Ottawa, Ontario, just had the first annual (hopefully) VeloFest. A few hundred people came out to the daytime activities and a few hundred more signed up for the Tour de la Nuit. Hopefully it will grow for next year.

And there are always multiple charity rides that draw thousands of people, and every sunday is Sunday Bikedays on the parkways, where they are closed to vehicular traffic.

Also they have in the past had the Ottawa Grand Prix, which is pretty well attended race - although it has been cancelled this year due to to route unavailablilty (construction).

Cool! Yup, paused the video and saw your "Hot Italian" jersey.

That was one popular time trial! There were so many riders I finally had to leave because it started getting dark. I was on my recumbent trike (great chair!), so I had to drag it through the weeds for a while on the other side of the canal so I wouldn't be on the course.

I also saw more handcyclists there than I saw at Eppie's. Got a separate video of that too. I have lots of respect for someone who can ride fast on arm power alone. Some of the handcyclists were almost as fast as the able-bodied competitors.

Heck, my city is building a velodrome for cyclist. We have a spring festival that used to have a criterium attached to it, however the city decided to drop that event and it is now ran as a separate event a week or so later.

Yes, that's why I had to attack the hill. I don't have a dedicated TT bike and I figured that since that path is pancake flat (except for those little bumps up to levee height), it would be a kick to try to do it fixed. I may have lost a few seconds on the turnaround because I had to be careful about pedal strike, but otherwise it didn't hold me back. It was fun. I might try that again this year.

I figured that hill would be a great place to record video. You may have seen me. I was sitting on a recumbent tadpole trike on the right side of the road. I did the same thing at last year's Eppie's cycling event. I sat at the top of the short steep roller in William Pond Park, right before the restrooms and drinking fountains. An adjoining city hosted the World Cycling Championships last year ... we went to the men's Time Trial.

It's a great idea to have more of these events for bicyclists. I wonder how insurance plays into such an event. Expensive? Anyone have a ball park number by chance?

Well, Portland, Oregon has Pedalpalooza each June. I'm always finding something to do when I visit that city at the end of June. This year, I think it will be the Canadian Ambassador's ride on Thursday the 23rd. Now where can I get a bike horn that plays "Oh, Canada'?

NYC has the 5 Boro Bike Tour, 40,000+, held in May. They close the route to cars with the ride passing over the Verrazano Bridge at the end. Then the NYC Century held in Sept, also does all 5 boroughs (no road closures). Plus Tour de Bronx, Tour De Brooklyn, Tour de Staten Island and Tour de Queens. And many others I can't even track of.

And of course the NYPD is doing their part to encourage cycling in NYC by having every officer write at least one ticket to a cyclist in 2011. 14,000 written by June and on schedule for 30,000.

I think so. If you can't get anything going on the Hill, roll on down to Little Rock. There's lots going on.

Have you checked with BCO or any other local groups about doing it?

Around here, many of the cycle clubs already have insurance, so they may be able to hold it under that aegis.
