I just received a pamphlet in the mail for this organization, and I'm pretty interested. Has anyone done this, and can you tell me what to expect for commitment (my time, money, etc)? There's an informational meeting next month in my city that I'm planning to attend, but it'd be great to walk into that meeting with some information from someone with firsthand knowledge/experience.

Thanks!

I did it once. It is quite a bit of work between the fundraising and the training, but how much time it takes depends on a lot of variables. For example, some people just have a better network for fundraising and reach the minimum amount easier. The event you choose makes a difference too. It could be a marathon or triathlon or century, among other things. Obviously, your experience in the sport dictates how much time you must train. I did a triathlon for the first time. While I was pretty experienced at biking and running, I was a poor swimmer, so I had to spend a lot of time learning to swim better. Fortunately, you get expert instruction at group training events, and that helps a lot. Overall, it was a great experience, I met some cool people, and got in really good shape. I'd recommend going to the informational meeting just to check it out.

May I ask what the minimum amount of funds to raise was at your event?

Actually, I don't remember for sure. This was a few years ago. I think it was something like $2000.

Wow - that's a lotta cash! But certainly not impossible, I guess.

I have observed the TIT on the Santa Fe Century, which they ride as a money maker each year.

They seem like a really great bunch of guys and gals, very supportive of each other. If soemone flats, the whole team stops and helps. All varieties of riders, from bulky guys losing weight to "typical" 145 lb'ers.

I think it would be a great experience, given it fits into your life time and other wise!

My roommate saw the flyer, and he's interested, bu he's trying to talk me into running a marathon rather than cycling a century...so who knows what I may end up doing. I'll definitely hit up that meeting next month, though. I'm no Lance Armstrong or...some running guy...but I'm confident I could do either with enough time to train and a goal.
