I never noticed this - media calls out model

I'm reading the local paper and there's article about bike accident (article here)

Looks like it was painful, I hope the cyclist is okay.
Something else got my attention, this line:
Police said the cyclist, who was riding a Cannondale road bike, collided with a maroon Jeep Grand Cherokee at Swallow Road and Shields Street.

The author of the article actually references the make and type of bicycle that the rider was on. That's not unusual for referencing an auto but I can't remember ever seeing it written for a bike. Did the journalist actually consider the model/type newsworthy or just pull the data from the police report?

That kind of news always blows!

But yeah, some attention to detail or perhaps the journalist was a cyclist himself trying to raise awareness. Which is always a good thing. Anybody else notice that the bike has platform pedals

yeah, I thought about that too .. did that help/worsen/dontmatter the situation? I.e. judging by the Jeep's windshield, the rider's landing spot, I'm wondering if different injury had they been in clipless?

I guess the story had to have at least 1 or 2 details in order to be newsworthy. No names, fault, conditions, or even a quote.

Sounds like it came from the police report to me.

Sometimes journalists get paid by the word or by the column inch.

If it hadn't been for the picture I would have doubted that there was even a jeep or a cyclist involved. The Coloradoan has become locally infamous for it's accuracy.

Hope whoever it was is going to be okay.

The poor Cannondale.

Oh ya, I hope the cyclists will be OK.

Writers sometimes strive for consistency. The journalist referenced the make and model of the motor vehicle. He may have done so for the bike just to be consistent, and because the information was in front of him on the police report.

Or, and you'll laugh, but maybe he just needed to fill up column space. Did the article appear in print? I've often had to add text to an article to make it fit the space available.

I bet it's the consistency thing though.
