how long is a helmet good for ?
I just noticed that my Bell helmet was purchased in year 2000. Its never been hit in a crash but the inside seems to be showing some signs of age. Is it time for a new one ?

I didn't think that there was any expiration date on a helmet unless it was crashed. You could always get some new pads for inside.

I've read the manufactures recommend you replace them after 5 years or so as the materials can break down...although obviously they might be biased
If the pads are falling off or you don't trust it in the least bit I'd just replace it. Your new helmet will probably be more comfortable anyway...

I know when I raced cars that the rules stated you needed a new helmet every 5 years. I think I am going to go buy a new bike helmet now. 11 years is a good run for the old Bell, lol

Keep the old helmet as a spare.
I used to have some BIG hits when I was mountain biking. 5 new helmets in 4 years and that was due to breakage. Glad It was the helmet that broke and not me.
But 5 years ago I went road and bought a new helmet around that time. Last year I followed the 5 year Suggestion and bought a replacement. It lasted 6 monthe before I broke it-----Mountain biking again. Back to the "OLD" spare and yet another new helmet. Helmets are tougher than you think but surprising how lightly you can hit a low hanging branch and break them.
