1st new battle scars ...

Went for a ride with my brother the other night. We were at a red light waiting for the green and then my brother decided to go since there were no cars. So, I think "Why not" and clip in. As soon as I take my 1st stroke, a car comes so I had to stop quick and unclip but did not get my left foot out in time. So, I fell onto my left side in the middle of the street and my right leg got gored and scraped nicely by the front sprocket. My fault for not obeying the light ... hurt like hell ... decent amount of blood ... some embarassment ... lesson learned. The good thing is that my bike received NO damage.

Yep...been there done that! You're right about being embarassing, fortunately that and the new tattoo was the worst thing that happened.

At least the BIKE's okay...phew. We all have our priorities here!

Nothing for me yet, just one pedal-clonk on the shinbone, but hey, the season's just started.

I have done it also, at traffic lights in front of a line of cars, couldn't get my foot out and over I go. It's pretty common for people to fall the first few times they try to unlip. The worst type of unclipping accident is when, you unclip but accidentally over balance to the side that is still clipped in, there is no way to unclip with your full body weight on the pedal, because you know if you unclip that foot your going to fall, either way you end up falling, no damage just embarrassing.

CHEERS.

I take it that means you'll be waiting for the green light in future.

Still, it's better to fall that way than to be an interesting if bloody hood ornament.

Wabbit, you have my sympathies on that one. I have had some pretty good off road injuries including a large ring that stuck about 8 teeth right into my leg and several broken ribs and toes but nothing seems to hurt quite so much as a heavy SPD pedal wizzing round and cracking you on the shin, it's an almost zen level of acute pain .

Ha! Me too...first road rash of the year last weekend. BUT..I didn't even get em on the road. I was in a hurry to get going on our morning ride (had to pee so wanted to get to a ladies room). I went to get on the bike and lost my balance and CRASHED. Good thing for helmuts as my head mashed into the bumper of my car. My hand and knee have MAJOR bruises. So much blood under the knee one that it's numb and I feel pressure. I'm ok...just got a good dose of embarrassment.
Next time... I'll pee BEFORE I attempt to ride!

Great to hear you are ok! Better to hurt your leg than get creamed by that car!

I don't feel nearly as bad now I bought my first road bike a week ago. I came up to a light, unclipped my right foot and tried to pedal ever so slowly with my left foot clipped and with just the toe of the right foot. Well, the right foot clipped in again just as I hit zero mph and over I went. Damn did I feel stupid!

The guy in the car at the intersection just smiled and gave me a thumbs up probably cause I stood up laughing and just shaking my head.

I got a bloody shin and knocked my derailler out of adjustment. Went straight to the LBS had them readjust it and I was off to finish my morning ride

I have had two very minor uh-ohs on my bike this year, both on the same ride! I think it was just a bad day. I first took a pedel to the shin, i dont remember what happend, it didnt bug me at all on the ride, only for a few weeks after! Near the end of the ride, i was in a full upright sprint. My leg brushed a zip tie holding my computer cable to the head tube. I now have two giant 4" cuts down my leg, just above my knee.

I havent had a serious case of road rash for the last few years, knock on wood!

Yesterday I had my third fall-over since getting the new bike....the first two were my fault--I goten off the pavement in way too high a gear, couldn't pedal, couldn't downshift because I had the chain stretched too tight, and my brain was busy with the shifters and pedal and only said 'Hey, better get your foot out of the clip' as I was beginning to tip over.

Yesterday's fall wasn't entirely my fault, though. (Too bad nobody was standing by with a video camera, I bet it was funny!) I did a bit of the Mountain Bay Trail, and downshifted the front to the lowest gear, and upshifted the back. I wasn't getting any resistance on the chain, though, so I upshifted the back again, pedalling furiously. I balanced for a few seconds, pedalling like a maniac and waiting for something to happen, and then I fell over. Turned out my chain had slipped quietly off the front gear.

No harm done, all my falls were on soft ground or trail. Bent a fender strut, but that's all.
