How to get rid of old bikes
 

What are suggestions to clear out the basement. Like to one day get a new MTB
however i have 3 bikes already
one newer road and 2 older mtb in good condition

sad part is even if i sold them, would never get good $ or anything at all
as who would spent over 100 bucks on a bike 20 years old.

So what are good ways to keep your pride and find a way to get rid of some good old bikes? suggestions

Give them away. You've gotten what you wanted out of them. What does it matter where they go and to whom?

Yup. Either sell for some token amount, or give them away to someone who will ride them. Or, give them away to someone who can strip them and use the parts to fix up neighborhood bikes. Maybe there's a bike co-op or something near you that could use an infusion of spare parts for older bikes. Or maybe there's an enthusiast who just likes to fix up old bikes, who could use a fresh supply of parts.

I gave mine to the local CO-OP, I also gave them most of the stuff in my parts bin.

Find kid in need and make his day!

If you have an especially good bike, and it means anything to you, keep it. If you still want to get rid of it and move on, SELL it. Universally, things are only worth what people pay for things. If you give it away and it costs the other person nothing, it will have zero value to that person. On the other hand, if you price it right and find a person really wanting it (that's what advertising is for), let them PAY you for it. The bike will then have value to its new owner.

"who would spent over 100 bucks on a bike 20 years old." - Depends what they are. check prices on ebay and craigslist for an idea.

"Like to one day get a new MTB" - why not upgrade or just overhaul what you have? I doubt sinmilar new stuff is any better than what you have, assuming they fit you.

Stick it on C-list for $25.00. It'll move.

I did. I have a 20 year old Hard Rock, about a year ago, I spent 300 bucks on having it overhauled. It was money well spent, especially since I ride it every day.

The "Hard Rock" is a no brainer. They are great frames.

I don't consider "only" three bikes a problem :innocent:

BTW that is probably only about half of them :eek:

As far as getting rid of old bikes, you might be surprised. Some people like old bikes, especially if they are a decent brand and quality. If they are lower end, donate them, put them on the lawn with a for sale sign. I sold several old Huffy MTB's for $35 a piece at a church yard sale.

Huffy's for $35? Isn't that a bit steep?

I didn't price them, but that is what they sold for. Actually for a working bike that isn't too bad. And they are better quality than the current crop of BSO's that come out of WM and other big box stores...barely. FWIW I routinely see Next double suspension bikes in broken condition for sale in thrift stores for $80, don't know if they sell for that or not. I wouldn't pay that much for them. I have paid $50 for a Huffy Baypoint 3 speed, needed parts to fix another one.

I had a Huffy as a kid and I broke it big time, I also had an AMC bike and broke it. The next bike was a Schwinn. That was when I learned what bikes could do without breaking. This was in the early 60's.

Just be sure to say they are "vintage" bikes when you put them on Craiglist, and "rare, custom bikes" to boot, perhaps "limited edition colors" only ridden three times and stored indoors, but you have to sell them TODAY in all caps - they MUST GO! - so they're only $150 apiece. :) :) :)

I'm always leery of someone who has to sell something right-now, TODAY, and it MUST GO! I get mental pictures of thieves who are anxious to sell their stolen goods and get out of town, because the cops are closing in on them...

Give them to people you know or sell them on Craigslist for $10. As a general rule, very little is selling on Craigslist right now. Just don't post anything in the Craigslist free section because you'll get flooded with emails.

If you aren't sentimental and are sure you want to get rid of them, I agree with one of the previous posts that made the point that someone who pays something for them will generally value them more, but price them reasonably. If you know a kid or struggling college student who really needs and would ride a bike, I'd give one to him or her, though. An unselfish act of generosity is "priceless" as they say.

Are you sure they're not better than something new you'd buy? IME, new things aren't made nearly as well as things were 20 years ago.

Consider offering them as trade currency for something cool someone has you may need or want. It's usually a better deal for both people involved rather than giving away or taking a hit to the wallet because of what you have put into it monetarily.

If you give them to Goodwill or a bike coop of some sort, they will most likely not be given away for nothing.

I hate seeing rusty old bikes laying out in the rain. I think about when they were shiny and new, and were once someone's pride and joy. They look so pathetic, old and abandoned...

I sold a 20 year old Cannondale road bike for $250. Was probably worth $300. Owner is extremely happy with it. Rides with me twice a week. He always makes mention as to how well he likes the bike.
