Hey everyone....somewhat new to the forums as i usually read and don't post. I just bought two days ago a brand new 2011 specialized roubaix comp with full 105. GOT AN AMAZING DEAL ON IT as it was sitting on the floor or a lbs for 9 months. unfortunately, since i got an amazing deal they didn't do a fitting for me. thats ok as i will pay my lbs to fit me properly.

anyway, on to the issue at hand. took it out today for its first 20 miles and boy does it creak. happens a lot more when pedaling but also just if i "rock" my body forward or backward i hear it. it is bothersome as i feel that i paid $2100 for a bike that should be "right". i heard this may be normal for carbon fiber. is it? anything i can do? something i should look for? something i need to tighten or check? very upset as i am fearing the worst (i usually do) that i got a lemon bike or something and thus the great price.

Take it back to the LBS and have them look at it.

wish it was that easy...lbs i bought it from is 2 plus hours away mine in town is good but weird hours and i won't be able to get in until after vacation and i planned on bringing bike with me on vacation

I had a creaking in my new Felt Z85 that sounds a lot like what you have. It turned out to be the bolts holding seat rails to the post. Try carefully tightening those. It's a start.

Step 1: LOCATE THE OFFENDING SOUND!
Step 2: Research why the sound is that way.
Step 3: Find solutions accordingly. (In this case I'd say the LBS since it's a more expensive bike)

Could be the seat. I got a nasty sounding clicking noise on my bike (Specialized Rockhopper) that seemed to happen mostly when I put the brakes on but I subsequently found it happened if I shifted my weight in my saddle. A little fiddling around and I realised it was the seatpost. So the next time I cleaned the bike I popped the saddle off, gave everything a good clean, and the problem went away.

I'm not sure if removing the saddle and cleaning everything to that degree is entirely necessary but it fixed the problem. Now I'm wondering if it's just down to tightening something a little too hard, or something is very slightly loose and so can creak a little.

haha...i weight too much. 37 years old...6' and 209 lbs
btw guys....it happens too when i am off saddle and "rocking" the bike forward/back or side to side
and i DO APPRECIATE ALL OF YOUR HELP

There are quite a few things that can cause the same sound.
Heck, I just had one that turned out to be my cable barrel adjusters at the front. It also happened while standing up and rocking the bike.
It took me a month to find it.
Get a tube of grease and start lubing. Other candidates are the stem bolts and the front hub at the fork.

Try to tighten the stem ,same thing happened to me drove me nuts.

I've had trouble with creaks before.
1. adjust your wheel quick releases either tighter or looser and see if that helps usually the rear one more than the front.
2. Pedals remove and grease the spindles.
3. make sure your cassette is tight
4. remove seat use carbon graphite paste and reinstall.

I'm putting my money on rear wheel not tight enough.

how do i tighten the stem? you mean the stem or the headset?

Interesting. Did it creak on your test ride or only after you rode it for a bit? As others have mentioned, check your seatpost, etc. Have you tried reproducing the sound with your bike sitting still by just pulling/pushing on random pieces of the bike (e.g. seat, drops, hoods, etc.)?

They woulbt let me ride it as the lbs in long island ny said their insurance didn't cover it The deal was too good...$2000 for a new roubaix comp thatvretails for $2700

That's kind of a red flag IMO. I would never buy a bike without being able to test ride it. Ever.

Anyway, that doesn't mean you have a "lemon" but I wouldn't go back to that LBS if I were you. The fact that they wouldn't work with you at all (to fit the dang thing) is another thing that seems suspect to me. I bet they paid less than $2k for the whole ensemble so it's not like they were doing an act of charity by selling you a bike that they couldn't otherwise move.

Have you tried creating the noise with your bike standing still to isolate the area it's coming from yet?

Yes i tried off the bike...apparently off the bike it's smooth and noise free.

I agree that you need to take it back to the original dealer and sit there until the bike is right. If they won't make it right, complain directly to Specialized.

Bummer! Do you have a trainer you could use to try to isolate the noise?

Good advice but it seems like his LBS doesn't really care about customer service. So, maybe complaining direct to Specialized is the way to go.

my lbs is solid but unfortunately i drove 2+ hours away from them to buy this bike i found on the internet to save $500. they will still service it i am sure but honestly i do feel awkward. lesson learned....next time when spending $2000, spend $500 more for the guy 1 mile away i guess

I'd take it back to the shop where it was purchased first. Too many red flags. If you wait too long, they'll say you did something to it! It should be under warranty and it should not have problems whether under warranty or not. The shop should make it good.

My Cannondale Synapse Carbon developed an irritating squeak, which consisted of two squeaks per one full revolution of the crank. I removed the saddle, cleaned connection points, put a drop of oil where rails entered saddle, but that did not stop the noise.

Next, I removed the seat post and cleaned it and the inside of the seat tube. I applied carbon assembly paste to seat post and inside of seat tube. Installed seat tube to original position and tightened it with my torque wrench. NO MORE NOISE.

The local Specialized dealer, where I got the carbon paste, told me that they have had a number of cases like this. Probably not the brand but the materials of construction of seat post and seat tube.

Yes on the head set. also check all crank bolts.
