Knee pain at top of pedal stroke

I have noticed that at the very top of my pedal stroke I am getting some knee pain, at the very top of my knee(look at your knee sitting down, the area right above/behind your knee cap). I raised my seat because I thought I was bending the knee too far repetitively but that only helped a little. If will go away after about a half hour of riding, but up until then I have to ride really slow as a faster cadence really makes it hurt.

Does anyone have any ideas as to either adjust my bike, or pre ride routine to help me out?

Consider a setback seat post to get your pedal stroke more straight without more height. A setback also opens up the rider envelope so that everything isn't so close.

It's that or "kneesavers" to better align your feet/legs during 360 deg of pedal stroke.

I have a set back seat post, so I moved my seat back in the post clamp. I will see how that goes. I will ride in the morning and report back.

I was having a similar problem, expect it was the bottom of the knee/kneecap that hurt. Doc said my knee cap isn't tracking properly and suggested a series of exercises and stretches and a kneebrace/sleeve with a hole in it for the kneecap.

Don't know if that's what he'd recommend for you, but you should probably talk to the doc about it.

So you ride in pain for 30 mins? Doesn't sound smart and might be making the problem worse.

Do you have health issues that might be causing this, does your bicycle fit you?

McFlurrey06, I have pain in the same area due to injuring my left knee. The kicker is what works for me isn't very likely going to work for you, go see a Dr. and have the bike fitted for your condition.

See a sports med doc who specializes in knees OP. Lots of things that could be and self treating, riding through the pain is often a not-so-smart plan...

I just got back from a ride, it seems to be better, and only shows up when I really have to accelerate.

If the mechanical adjustments don't do it for you then it's time to see a doctor without delay!
