Just bought a Giant Escape 1 bike

Hi forum.

For my first year of college I rode a 1980s Sintour Raleigh hybrid bike. It was pretty hard to pedal probably because the gears were sluggish due to age. I wanted to get a new bike this summer and my parents agreed to pay for it. I only really started riding this past year at school, but I enjoyed it and have been doing some little rides around my area recently, only like 5-10 miles though.

My budget was about $450, and I really wanted to try to get an entry level road bike. However, I went to a store in our town today with my mom and they had a 2012 Giant Escape 1 for $420 and a sale on a 2011 Giant Escape 1 for about $475. I told my mom that I wanted to wait a few days before buying to get input, but she forced the purchase (I don't want to sound bad, but basically she was just like NO YOU AREN'T WAITING YOU'RE BUYING A BIKE)

I would like to know if anyone has any experience with these bikes and has any opinions on them. I know it's too late now to do what I wanted to do (maybe look on Craigslist for some used ones and then ask for advice) but I'd like to know if I'm okay or screwed myself

Thanks

I don't have the Escape 1, but I have a Giant hybrid that I really like that's great for commuting and getting around campus.

I think you'll really enjoy riding it. :)

I have an Escape 1 -- 2010 or 2011? Not sure.

Anyway, it's a good basic bike. It doesn't have fancy components, but everything works. I've taken it on long rides (up to 50 miles), with no complaints.

I changed the handlebars to bullhorns, because my wrists demand more hand positions.

For an additional $100 - 150 or so, I could have had a Specialized Sirrus or a Jamis Coda, but I didn't have that $100 that week. And I only ride this bike for 4 weeks out of the year, when we go to our "summer place".

Ride it and enjoy it.

Giant makes good bicycles, I currently have 3 that all date from the late 1980's. One in particular has taken a beating and is still rolling along.

Just realized that I have an Escape 2, not an Escape 1.

The Escape 1 has nicer components, a lighter fork. Probably the same frame.

Anyway, the fact remains, you got a good bike. What are you doing reading this? You should be riding it. ;-)

So long as it fits and given the ever increasing prices, you didn't get screwed. Odds are you would've been if you went the CL route...

Giant makes good bikes. The components appear to be good. I think you did alright.

just took it for about a 12 mile ride on flat roads and up some hills i struggled with before

pretty good bike, of course that's compared to the old 25 year old one

Giant makes some good bikes, both for themselves and for several other companies. At least they build their own frames. The excape 1 is a pretty good city bike. Like someone else mentioned I would change the bars to treking bars. The old transit had them and I thought they were cool.;)

I have had a Giant Escape 1 since May. I think mine is a 2011. It is a nice blue color. I use it to commute to work and for pleasure. I have put about 600 miles on it so far this season. The LBS upgraded me to puncture resistant tires, I use clip-less pedals and attached a Topeak rack and bag. Had a minor front brake issue which was repaired under warranty. The bike is comfortable and can be fast. It is much more efficient than my old bike which was a Raleigh comfort bike. I think you will like it. I did a lot of research prior to my purchase. Ruled out Trek and Cannondale. I felt the Giant was a better value.
