Social website for organizing cyclist group.

Several of my neighbors in my condo building have expressed interest in forming a cyclist group for all levels. I'd like to manage this all online.

I was wondering what social website you folks have seen or used to coordinate this. I need something that allow for people to self register, allows for events to be proposed (or simple mailing list) and some bike specific features would be cool.

I tried mapmyride.com but the groups feature seems deficient. I couldn't even create an event although it has an "event" tab in the group. Facebook is not an option. Many folks don't use it, want to use it, or want to mix their personal profiles/life with this.

Thoughts?

This. Since so many people are on FB, it is easy to pull additional people into the group.

If you want to be a little more exclusive, maybe try Google+ so you can control the flow of information a little more readily. (G+ has "circles" of people so you can send communications just to the circle of friends you want to get them.)

But FB works great for the groups I ride with.

Try Groups.google.com Set up a group and because you own the group site you can allow people to join themselves or you can add them by e-mail address. You can also ban and remove anyone that becomes a pain.
