Disc brake pad life

What is a normal, average life for a set of disk brake pads on a road hybrid? I know it can vary widely, but are we talking a few thousand miles or ???

When cycling in the summer on the flat terrain here in Holland Ive not been able to wear them out. After that I did a tour in the alps and after ~1500 km with a lot of braking down the mountains and no maintenance I replaced the pads. The new pads lasted about 2400 km, they were completely worn and the rotors had to be replaced too: I used the bike as a winter commuter and the water, dirt and salt did their thing.
