Did someone try to steal my disk brake caliper?

So I got on my bike today to go to the library on campus, and when I got to the rack, I pull the rear lever only to have it do nothing. Luckily, I didn't have too much speed and just hit the bike rack and looked really stupid.

I hop off and bam, there's my rear brake caliper just hanging, off of the disk. Both bolts that connect it to the other part, were gone.

1. My rear brake caliper is now closed.
2. Why would someone do this?

I find it highly unlikely that both bolts came off, and at that, would the rear caliper have come off the disk, that easily?

Main question is, why wouldn't someone just have popped the caliper from the line and take it? Or is it more difficult than that?

Maybe you have an enemy who wanted you to wreck.

I'm puzzled. Did you check your brakes prior to starting out, or just push off and go without making sure everything was ready? I take a minute (usually not that long) and confirm that my tires are properly inflated, the brakes are not fouled, etc.

I always squeeze the brakes before I start out. Also, on my dirt bike, I always check to make sure the throttle closes properly before starting it. Had it stick wide open on me...............just once. Not much fun.
