In 2009, I traveled a leg of the Tour d'Afrique with some colleagues from Lonely Planet. We raised money for their worthy foundation - which promotes biking and sustainable transportation for students, health care workers and educators in Africa and it was an amazing adventure. During the trip, I took many pictures of the bike badges we encountered - many of them heavy-as-hell steel frames manufactured in India and China. The bikes were true work horses, helping carry enormous loads, welded together to be workable and a vital part of rural life in Zambia which would make our idea of "bombproof" seem a bit comic by comparison. I thought the badges on these bikes were themselves lovely and wanted to share some of them. As I search for my perfect ride, I think about these bikes a lot, and it helps keep things in perspective. I hope you enjoy!
