What bike supplies do you carry?

What do you carry with you when you ride, and where do you carry it? I've got two main reasons to bike: commuting to school on the MTB and racing around on my roadie. I've seen posts from people who carry everything from CO2 cartridges to spare inner tubes for flats, portable repair kits, etc. For roadbike training I've been carrying nothing but a cell phone, a credit card, and a twenty-dollar bill. What do you carry?

khuon 12-09-04 11:54 PM

Things I carry with me when roadbiking:
Curiously enough, even with all this stuff crammed into my pockets, I still have quite a bit of room for other small things. If I think I'll really be far away from civilisation or riding where water stops aren't plentiful then I'll drag along a CamelBak Lobo and reapportion everything appropriately. I've however been able to get away with 100-120 miles without one so far.

But on really long unsupported road rides (>100mi) and on all mountain bike rides, I'll use a CamelBak MULE which will contain the following additions to the above list:
  • 100 oz. hydration bladder
  • Topeak minipump (with patchkit in handle)
  • additional spare tubes
  • two spare 9V batteries for my shocks (K2 SmartShocks - MTB only)
  • mini-tripod for digital camera
  • replacement/spare derailleur hanger
  • spare seatpost clamp
  • a couple of zip-ties
  • small roll of electrical tape
  • small roll of toilet paper in plastic ziploc bag

And of course if I think I'll be riding into the night, I'll have the lights and blinkers along too.

nd if I need extra room, I also will use a couple of Bento Boxes.

Don't believe in CO2 cartridges..Have a really good pump w built in PSI gauge..Love it..
I have a multiple tool kit, two tubes, speed lever, baby wipes, tire patches, tube patches, and a small light in case. Cateye 300..More serious light of course if it is an official night ride..Still carry an extra head mounted light for repairing flats at nite.
If riding bike w/o rear pack, carry an extra water bottle( empty) for putting jackets and stuff in it...
oh, yeah..money, change and a credit card...That goes into a plastic bag in my jersey pocket.

Multitool (top peak) with chain tool

Park tools black spoke wrench

Cell phone... saved me on Wednesday

Actually, that's the small wedge bag. It only looks big. I can't fit a jacket in it... at least not with all the other stuff I have in there. It has 50 cu. in. of storage space and its LxWxH is 7"x3.2"x4.5". It replaced the micro wedge I used to have which was 5"x3"x2.8" and required me to store my spare tube strapped to the outside/underside.

Besides my cell phone, a credit card, and a twenty dollar bill, I always carry these essential tools in my single small black leather saddlebag, pictured below.

LOL! Thanks for the crack-up!

Retro Grouch 12-10-04 01:01 AM

On my road bike I generally just carry enough stuff to handle one flat tire. No cell phone either. To put it into perspective, I don't necessarily think that a 5 mile hike-a-bike is the end of the world and I think that once you allow yourself to feel you have to be prepared to do any repair on your bike, the burden of the tools you have to carry is exceeded by the burden of the worry that you carry with you. On my road bike I like to carry CO2 because I'm too lazy to get a road bike up to pressure with a full size frame pump and, at my age, I might not have enough time left to do it with a mini pump.

I haven't gone mountain bikeing in a while, but I do carry a few more tools with me when I do. Broken chains, for example, are common when mountain bikeing so I carry a Park mini chain tool and a few allen wrenches with me.

Uh - I'm writing this from home so I've obviously always made it back and I must be carrying everything that I need.

I had always hoped to find wedge that might accomdate jackets, etc..But, then there is the water bottle trick.

You forgot the trailer attachment for one of these...

Also... don't forget to ride safely. Wear your helmet!

Riding in the Seattle area oftentimes means riding in the rain. I picked up one of these a while back but admittedly don't use it much. Usually when it's raining enough to really matter here, it's also a little colder (late fall and winter seasons... read: now) so I'll use my winter-weight riding jacket with a little more warmth and just keep it on throughout the entire ride. However, in warmer climates the lightweight one can be useful.

The only issue is that my frame doesn't offer too much room for it.

Khuon..Remember where you got that tube ? wedge? Think that is the Bellweather symbol?

Yeah. It's a Bellwether. I think I actually bought it from my LBS or maybe I ordered it online from gear.com (now overstock.com). It's not really a wedge. It's more of a cover/bag with velcro straps. It has no rigidity once the jacket is removed from it so the bag can be rolled up or folded and stored in one of your pockets or better yet, just rolled tight and revelcroed back to the frame.

nick burns 12-10-04 07:44 AM

Silca frame pump (w/ campy head). Small wedge seat pack w/ spare tube, patch kit, tire irons, multi tool, and a few dollars.

PWRDbyTRD 12-10-04 09:51 AM

2-28oz bottles, co2 (2 cartridges) and patch kit. Topeak Alien, Gerber Multitool, tactical knife (super sharp), rain jacket (straps nicely to my camelbak), sunglasses, that's about it. If I know I'm gonna be riding a good bit I'll put water into my camelback otherwise I stick with bottles.

PanPanX 12-10-04 10:24 AM

khuon, i understand the importance of being prepared and whatnot, but my god.. do you really need all that stuff?

i only carry my wallet (has money, debit, credit card, etc etc,), cell phone, tire levers, spare tube, small pump (only goes up to 90psi, just barely enough for me to finish any ride without really having to give myself a hernia while pumping), arm/leg warmers, jacket, pair of sun glasses and some snacks.

oh but then the only time i ride alone is when im going to work. but thats okay cuz its only 5 miles away. and i can easily call someone or anything if im badly hurt and they'll be where i am within minutes.

My Performance rack bag has a few side pockets. In one I carry a patch kit, tire levers, and mini-tool. I also carry a mini-pump, REI full-finger gloves, and a reflective ankel strap. I don't understand carrying CO2 cartridges ... I can pump a presta valve up to 90 psi in about 30 seconds with a mini pump. Schrader is a pain though.

caloso 12-10-04 11:04 AM

I guess I'm more of a minimalist than I thought. I'll carry a water bottle and a mini-wedge containing 1 tube, 1 CO2 cartridge and Air Chuck, 1 tire iron, 1 Crank Bros. mini-tool. In my jersey pocket I usually carry my cell phone, money and ID, and a clifbar.

For commuting, add lights, blinkies, and RaceBlades, but that's about it.

Daily Commute 12-10-04 11:07 AM

On my tube, I have a pump.
On my helmet, I have an LED (for nighttime repairs/back up lighting).
Handlebars have an HID light.
Now, I have a 1 LED back up headlight on the handlebars as a back up.
As soon as Nashbar delivers it, I will replace the LED with a 10w halogen.

In my seat bag, I have:
Spare tube
Patch kit
Tire levers
Chain tool
Spare link
Phillips screwdriver
Flathead screwdriver
10 mm ratchet
tiny 10 mm wrench (for breaks)
8 mm ratchet
Bus fare
Health Insurance Info
$20 cash
Folding allen wrenches
Energy bar
Spoke wrench
Zip ties
Electrical tape (wrapped around one of the ratchets)
3 AAA Batteries in case one of my back up LED's fails.
