How to measure quill stem?

What is the proper way to measure the stem and/or fork?

My bike is a cross between a 1997 Trek 850 and 1997 Trek 930, each had different size forks/stems, so I'm not sure which mine has without measuring.

I use calipers and measure just above the nut that holds the fork assembly together. Or you can go to Bikepedia...

The 850 has a 1" and the 930 has the 1-1/8" "oversized". FWIW I measure my stuff.

Are we talking about quill stems? Isn't it different by manufacturer, if not by cyclist? For non-quill, isn't it axis to axis?

I know the 930 and 850 have different size forks, that's why I wasn't sure which the VW Jetta bike has... :)

Will find a set of calipers and measure tomorrow. Thanks!

You can use an adjustable wrench and a tape measure in a pinch.

I haven't bought anything yet... Measure first, then buy. :)
