Tagalong/trailer bikes

I am looking for a tagalong bike for our three & a half year old - does anybody have any advice. there seems to be a massive weight variation between models, but no source of specs.
I was on the verge of buying a Trek - the smartest to look at, but nearly had a hernia lifting it up - it must have been 30 pounds, add to that the weight of the girl!!
Some have gears - are these essential to have?
Any advice?
Thanks,
Steve.

Keep it simple. Extra cost and gears provide little return for a tag-along. The gears are worthless in my opinion. Kids only pedal half the time anyhow - usually when you're going down hill towards a stop sign! I started my son on the tag-along at about 3.5 years old. We both had a blast.
