"Plasma estradiol concentrations were more than two times higher in the cyclists than in the triathletes and recreational athletes,
and total testosterone levels were about 50 percent higher in cyclists than in the recreational athletes..."
I wonder if these results would aid Floyd Landis in any way... better check that chamois cream container before entering the
doping control trailer!

Pfffft. It seems the goal of any university study is to inject "anxiety serum" into your activity life.
Nice try.
Ride on.

What level of activity counts as a "serious leisure male cyclist"?
Anyway, the findings are interesting, but without a working theory about why this only shows up in cyclists, it's kind of pointless to worry about it.

Thank goodness I'm not a serious male cyclist.
All those limericks I've been spouting on the MUP are really paying off.
Phew!

I read the study and the media is mistating what the conclusions of the study were. The study did NOT conclude that male reproductive vitality was comprimised in anyway. It simply showed that hormones related to male reproductive health were altered when engaged in long term strenous cycling.
The study did NOT study cyclists and their sperm counts or health of sperm.
In the real world what does this mean for cyclists ? Nothing.

Whew, good thing I don't use any creams.
And this is totally assinine: "This new piece of research confirms a long standing conjecture of mine. Guys should drive rather than bike."

I recall about 3 years ago at UCLA's triathlon on campus in March, there were nursing students handing out requests to be part of a study. This must have been it, or part of it. I did the bike leg of a 3 member team. I'm not too sure how they defined "serious cyclists". There were participants of all ages and backgrounds. Open division and collegiate. Some were fit and some had a hard time riding up Charles Young Drive to the dorms.
I would think that a better group would be to do blood testing on the ultra marathoners and the cyclists who do the Adventure Corps Furnace Creek 508 or the Badwater Ultra Marathon.
You really have to examine carefully how the study was performed.

From their study, it would also include those who are serious stationary exercise bike spinners too.

Speaking of which, isn't testosterone one of the common substances used in doping? How do we know that all the cyclists were clean? I guess since they weren't pros that would give some confidence.
