National Bike to Work Day

From what I know today (May 17) is National Bike to Work Day. Have heard also that it is tomorrow....but I am going with today as where I live is saying it is today.

Anyway...figured I would post a picture of myself after arriving at work on my bike. (bikelongbeach.org asked for submittal of photos to promote riding today).

Fort Worth is doing Bike to Work Day on Friday. I plan to ride. It will be 23 miles in (to take advantage of festivities downtown) and 17 miles home. The ride in will be in three parts: Riding to a meetup point, then riding with a group (including the mayor) to downtown, then riding out to my office which is 12 miles from downtown.

I didn't participate but there was a cycling event at our Fountain Square at lunch, and the bike transit center offered free parking.

Bike To Work day only applies to those who regularly drive their cars to work. For people who regularly ride their bicycles to work Bike To Work day makes no sense whatsoever, since they bike to work [almost] every day already. Regular cyclists have to up the ante. For this reason I hereby officially decree: for regular bike commuters tomorrow will be henceforth known as Unicycle To Work day! (Cue in fanfare. The crowd applauds earnestly.) And don't let me catch any of you riding on two wheels!

Now for that guy who regularly unicycles to work on Lawrence Expressway in Santa Clara, CA...

Actually, a few years ago, I encouraged a coworker to ride with me on Bike to Work Day. Unfortunately I don't think she ever rode again.

Not sure if I will be in trouble here (this isn't the 41 right?)....but yes I have a mirror on my helmet. I do listen to music but not loud and I don't usually have trouble hearing traffic noise or other cyclists coming up to pass me with the "on your left"...I will also usually respond with a "got it, thank you" to them so they know I heard them

Most folks who have never listened to an audio device while riding have this false assumption that you can't hear anything, which is what makes the usual music-while-riding threads so entertaining.

This is me with Fort Worth Mayor Betsy Price. I rode 7 miles from my house to a meetup point in a church parking lot, where Betsy, me, and a few dozen other folks rode the 4 miles into downtown where the city was hosting festivities at the train station. After that I rode the 12 miles to my office. (Without the extra detour it's about a 17 mile commute total for me.)

Too bad I can't bike to work, because my work place is about 30 miles away and I start very early.

I thought your wife didn't let you out of the house without your chicken?

Maybe a combo drive/ride? It's what I do, just takes a little organization. And as far as early, so what? I used to ride to work at 4 AM, nice time of day with little traffic. Sorry, just playing devil's advocate.
