If you could only have five bikes...
Okay, so now that I"m off motorcycles, I'm thinking that if my wife will let me have two motorcycles, four or five bicycles will be an easy sell. I'm sure there have been dozens of posts like this, but I wonder what you all would do. Here are my five...today. I already have the first one. And yes, I'm pretty brand loyal.
1. Specialized Allez Compact - For everyday training use. A base model, but I want to upgrade the components at some point.
2. Specialized Tricross - For doing the Katy Trail and some touring.
3. Specialized Stumpjumper 29er - The kids are going to want to ride some trails with me, plus Colorado is not that far.
4. Specialized Roubaix - There is a Grand Fondo in my future.
5 Globe Daily or Bianchi Milano - To go to the grocery store.
Of course, I also want a nice Bianchi road bike. Hey, I'm a Vespa fan, I can't help it. I don't know where that one will fit in. Maybe she'll let me have six?

Right now four (not including the floating population of beach bikes) as follows.
My folder, a Dahon Boardwalk that I find surprisingly useful. Parking is never a problem and for spur of the moment rides it can't be beat.
An old Bianchi Advantage hybrid. What the wife calls my SUB. (Sport Utility Bike) Fenders, racks, flipped moustache style bars. When I look at it I think of PeeWee Herman's bike.
A Specialized Langster Single Speed. Love this bike. Simple, accelerates like a rocket and very comfy. I live in the Low Country of GA/SC and on days of no wind or light wind it's my bike of choice.
My Bianchi 928 with Campy Veloce 10. I can't imagine why I'd look at another road bike. This is my third Bianchi road bike. The company makes a wide range of bikes but they have a real touch, IMO, with road bikes. Plus you can generally get them off the rack equipped with the Campy.
Having said that about the 928, there is a LBS locally that has a Lynskey frame that is "just my size" and the owner has made me an offer that is oh so tempting. I've never built a bike up from scratch so I've got the wants for it pretty bad. Two problems I see in my way. The stock market is killing me right now so "disposable" income isn't easy to come by. And if it was there is the distinct threat of divorce.
So, if any body out there wants a really sweet Ti frame and carbon fork for $1700 and needs it in 53cm size and 54cm top tube PM me and I'll put you in touch with the shop.

I think at one point I figured that 11 was the ideal number of bikes. Lemme see if I can remember them
1. casual road bike (my Pinarello)
2. race road bike (nothing too fancy, something with 9 speed brifters probably)
3. rigid MTB
4. full suspension MTB
5. CX
6. Track
7. Tandem
8. Nice folder - Bike Friday, maybe Ritchey Breakaway
9. Around town bike - single speed w/ basket
Can't think of the other two ATM, must not have needed them that badly

I have 10 or 11 bikes but I could get rid of any bike with straight bars,
What I would like is a
1) Pinarello road bike,
2) Custom lugged Waterford
3) Bruce Gordon touring
4) some single speed/fixie
5) another road bike or a Vanilla
and just keep adding as the fancy hit me.
Just saw Steely Dan's post, I would like a folder too, and one of the bikes needs S&S couplers.

That helps too
I have 8 bikes at the moment, but have only fulfilled 3 of the bike categories I'd like to have.

Nice list.. You are really a specialized fan.. I too hanker for that Specialized Tri Cross. For now, I am content with my Surly Cross Check. and a couple others.. As for now, four bikes fill my needs.

Wow... it'd be interesting to see what I used to want, what I want now, and what I'll want in the future... but for the present, and not in any particular order...
1. Rivendell
2. Ebisu
3. Vanilla
4. Palo Alto (already have, yay)
5. Probably another custom maker but there are so many I like I can't choose now!

There is just something appealing to me about those Bianchi's. That Imola Grand Fondo bike looks awesome. It reminds me of my old Schwinn Continential (which was black with gold lettering), but of course I'd get the Celeste.
I know, I know, looks aren't everything. I was dead set on buying a Sirrus before I got on the Tricross and Allez. I could afford the Allez right now, which is why I went for it.

Only five?
Ok then, of the ones currently in my garage/house, here it goes:
1 - Dahon Mu Uno folder
2 - my old Spec Stumpy commuter
3 - Niner RIP, 29er fully
4 - Salsa Ala Carte SS 650b
5 - Fat Chance Bro Eddy 26er
The first on the list will most likely be bumped next year for something carbon, 700c and discs.

1) A 3-speed with a rack and baskets, for going around town and picking up stuff.
2) A dutch-style cargo bike, with plenty of low gears and a trailer hitch for hauling larger amounts of cargo.
3) A nice old road bike, for when I'm in a hurry or just want a fast ride.
4) Some sort of homebuilt recumbent, just because I like building things
5) A folding bike so I can get on the bus or train if necessary.

I only have 2, which seems like a good number but I wouldn't mind having Lynskey (if for no other reason then to support the Tennessee economy.)
