Because this is your first day on the forum (WELCOME...WELCOME..) you may be surprised to learn that some "four letter" words distress some forum members a great deal. One of those words starts with a "B".
Back in the stone age, President Eisenhower had a couple of heart attacks. His elderly heart doctor tried to get the President onto a bike. Said it was the best exercise for the heart. Ike went golfing, and died thereafter of his heart problems. His doctor was often photographed riding a bike though.
The resulting publicity is given much of the credit for the increase in people riding bikes during the 1960's.
So, regardless of the "marketing" advantages for Trek, if seeing the President on a bike gets a few thousand people off of the sofa and onto a bike, that is a good thing. Hopefully, he will stick with it after the photographer is out of sight.

Yeah, I saw the picture. It's long been known that both Bush and Kerry cycle. The picture caught my eye because he was on a Trek 9.8 carbon hardtail, if I remember correctly. There had been earlier reports that he rode a Fuel. Several months ago, there was a story about Bush showing up to a couple events with band aids on one of his hands because he had crashed while riding the trails on his ranch in Texas. The really interesting part is that a Texas bikeforums member mentioned a person who he thought could have been secret service dropped off a Trek Fuel for a tune-up at the LBS the afternoon that Bush was reported to have crashed. Who knows. It might just be that he got to wrench on Mountain Bike One.
I was glad to see that both major candidates enjoyed outdoor physical activity. I'll really get excited, though, when some who likes to play soccer runs for office.

Simply stated, he doesn't ride. That shot/story was 100% about publicity. Who rides a $5k Trek Fuel in tennis shoes? I guess he couldn't master clipless pedals in the 10 minutes he was on the bike for the obvious photo opp.

Whether he really rides or not, I am just glad it was a mountain bike.
