Shimano Number Schemes: Magic, Science, or Something Else?
I'm looking at Jenson USA and I see two 105 FDs.
Shimano 105 FD-5504 Front Derailleur (https://www.jensonusa.com/Front-Derai...ont-Derailleur) and Shimano 105 FD-5501 Front Derailleur (https://www.jensonusa.com/Front-Derai...ont-Derailleur).
What is the difference between the 5504 and the 5501? Last years model? How do I find this for other components?
Thanks!

Nope. That's all there is to it. Shimano nomenclature increments "double" front derailleurs by three to make a "triple". That is:
Ultegra FD-6500 "double" + 3 = FD-6503 "triple"
Tiagra FD-4400 "double" + 3 = FD-4403 "triple"
Dura-Ace FD-7800 "double" + 3 = FD-7803 "triple"
etc.

And typically XX01 & XX04 are different finishes. Example is 6601 Ultegra "double" "ice grey finish" 6604 Ultegra "triple" ice grey
