reaching 'the zone' - feeling like you ride can at speed all day

Recently after 4 months of intensive riding I've been reaching an interesting state. After the first few miles of any ride I fall into this 'zone' for lack of a better word where cruising between 30-45km/h seems effortless even up light grades. Just today I was on rolling terrain and looked down at the computer while going up a fairly shallow hill and noticed I was going faster than I had been going down.

Today after a century ride on Sunday on the commute home I met another bike on the way, He was working hard but for some reason going up hill at 30km/h it felt like I could do it all day with seemingly no effort. So I decided to play a little. Stuck to his wheel but it felt so easy that I passed him going up at 40km/h and just kept going. The only thing that slowed me was the traffic. Just 3 months ago I was pushing hard to maintain 20km/h for 30km. Now the difference is... night and day. Training really does do good things.
