Shimano cleat nuts - mythical unicorn?

I ordered and received a set of new Shimano A530 clipless SPD pedals that came with SH51 cleats, but Shimano DID NOT include cleat nuts.

I also ordered and received a set of new Shimano SH56 cleats, and they did not include cleat nuts. I have on order the Shimano M087G shoes, which I have read does not include anything other than the shoes based on some reviews. Where do I get the cleat nuts? Why doesn't Shimano include them?

Update: I called up Shimano and they said the shoes should come with the cleat nuts.

The cleats and the cleat nuts (SH-A100) are sold separately. The cleat nuts usually come with the shoes.

Somehow I found myself short a set of cleat nuts. I bought an extra pair of them online from Niagara Cycleworks. My biggest problem in ordering them was first figuring out what the darn things were called.

Most LBSs will have piles of them in a drawer somwhere. They likely won't charge too much for them.

What the hell are cleat nuts? Do you mean the bolts?

I still have no idea. The object in the pic is something I've never seen before. The actual threaded inserts that the bolts engage have been an integrated part of the sole of every shoe I've purchased in the last 20 years.

Some shoes have the threaded inserts integrated into the sole. I didn't see this on most of Shimano's MTB shoe offerings. I think they had them integrated on the road shoes with the dual Look/SPD cleat arrangement. But basically I think there is a mix of shoes with and without integrated holes. The M087G I ordered is supposed to use cleat nuts.

That might explain it - I've never looked closely at any Shimano MTB shoes. The only pair I've ever bought is Lake (though I'm considering getting rid of them in favor of something without laces).

I learn something new every day.
