Bike cable and brake part link question

which bike cable is best?? Should I go with the coated one or the Teflon ones? I ride in all weather conditions. I am looking for a decent one not too cheap and not too expensive in cost. These cable are for my canti-lever brake that uses a Brake Part Link Wire which comes in different sizes does the size matter for the brake part link wire( its a trangular shape with two cables one is fixed and one is where the bike cable goes through it)??

:thumb: Thanks for your help.

I prefer lined housing with stainless cables. Here's some info on cantilever geometry

Alligator iLink, Yokozuna, Nokon, Campagnolo are some of the ones I've used. Jagwire, Shimano also work. Gore ride-ons are ones I will not use again.

OK- I think you're asking two different questions:

For a cantilever link wire (also called a straddle cable), coating or material does not matter. If it needs to be replaced (this is unusual) then you should try to replace it with the same style unless you are experienced in setting up cantilever geometry.

For the cable from the lever to the brake, I agree with Dedhed: stainless cables are the way to go. QBP/Jagwire sells good ones: http://www.universalcycles.com/shopp...&category=3974

If that's what is on your bike right now, then yes, you need to get the correct link wire for your brake. However, since I don't know what brake you have now, I can't say if it's correct. Can you post a picture?

i have this brake http://www.amazon.com/Shimano-BR-CT9...mano+brake+set

the brake part link broke and i measured it about 3 inch long they come in like 5 different size i was thinking purchasing a 73mm brake part link is good since 3 inch is like 76mm?? http://www.amazon.com/Pyramid-Z-Type...rake+part+link

my original brake part link is this one just a couple bux more i am not sure why maybe paying for the brand??? http://www.amazon.com/BRAKE-PART-ACT...rake+part+link

do you think the brake part link will fit this cable i am about to get? http://www.amazon.com/Bike-Cable-Jag...d_sim_sbs_sg_2

what do you think guys??

I think I still want to see a picture of your brake on your bike. If the link wire is still there, I don't think you need to replace it. They don't usually wear out.

That Jagwire cable will work fine with either of the link wires you pointed to.

I like die drawn slicked cables.. the stainless is better,
but I try to solder the cable end where I cut it,
and Stainless is harder to solder..
Zn coated are soldered more easily.. then greased..

You show a low profile type caliper, those are commonly better when link wire is shorter.

the shimano one has a separate short cable , the long wire continues down thru a tube to the fixing bolt.
for the other side..

You buy those in various lengths.

Replace your link wire with one that's the same length as the one you're taking off. Make the two sides match when you connect it to the brake arm.
