Can anyone recommend a shoe that allows the cleats to adjust further back in relation to the foot than the average shoe? Or, a shoe that lends itself to an easy modification? Trying to resolve a numb toes issue and I want to experiment with midfoot cleat placement. Specifically interested in SPD shoes

Can't you just use a Dremel tool to elongate the slots on any shoe? a quarter-inch ought to be far enough for proof-of-concept.

i have some shimano's and some PI's and neither appear to be receptive to modification.

Do your current shoes have slots for the cleats or holes? I have slotted shoes like this that allow for the cleat to be pretty far back.

all my shoes have slots like you pictured. the further I move back the cleats back the longer I can ride without numbness. all my shoes have the cleats back as far as they can go.

those actually look like the slots are back further than mine. I have shimano M087's

You might want to check out different Shimano shoes to see if the slots are long enough for what you're looking for.

If you get the cleat too far back you can cause knee problems. If you toes go numb it could be a pedal or shoe problem. I can't use Speedplay pedals they cause problem with numbness, I switch back to Look and no more problem. You might also need a wider toe box shoe so your toes have room when the feet swell.
